Chu Feng didn't concern himself with Zhang Xuefeng's life, but the security guards had to take responsibility. If Zhang Xuefeng were to die in the hospital, his father would surely hold the hospital accountable. Several guards hurriedly carried Zhang Xuefeng into the emergency room and found a doctor to treat his injuries. Zhang Xuefeng had already passed out; otherwise, given his temperament, he would have called his father by now.

Chu Feng, meanwhile, went with Han Xuefang to help care for patients in the hospital. Since he had nothing else to do, he figured he might as well lend a hand, making Han Xuefang’s work a little lighter. The nurses at the station all brightened when they saw Chu Feng. Their work was truly exhausting, with little time to rest. Many of them had broken up with boyfriends shortly after starting to date.

All the nurses envied Han Xuefang for finding a doctor as her boyfriend; at least, her future seemed a little more comfortable. Chu Feng spent the entire afternoon helping Han Xuefang and the nurses administer injections to patients. He even used his watch’s power to cure one patient’s illness.

At half past five, the night shift nurses came to take over, and Chu Feng waited for Han Xuefang to finish her shift.

“Let’s go. I’ll treat you to something delicious tonight as a reward for helping me all afternoon,” Han Xuefang said, taking Chu Feng’s arm as they walked outside.

“Old Chen, look, Chu Feng is really dating that nurse. Did he go confess to her right after you talked to him today?” No sooner had Chu Feng and Han Xuefang taken a few steps than they were spotted by Old Wang and Old Chen.

“Of course, I was right. The boy puts on a serious face, but he’s full of mischief inside. At lunch he said he’d think about it, and now look—he’s already gotten together with her,” Old Chen said, genuinely happy for Chu Feng. After all, he’d discussed it with him that morning; if the two really married, Old Chen would be half a matchmaker.

“Old Chen, why didn’t you let me know you came down?” As Chu Feng and Han Xuefang approached, Chu Feng caught sight of an elderly man out of the corner of his eye. When he looked again, it was Old Chen.

“I came to see you two. You rascal, what did you say to me this morning?” Old Chen looked at the pair, his mood especially cheerful.

Han Xuefang blushed at Old Chen’s words. Though she didn’t know his identity, she could tell he was a kind and amiable man.

“We’re just getting to know each other, it’s not moving that quickly. Don’t tease me—see, you’ve made her blush,” Chu Feng replied.

Chu Feng spoke with Old Chen without any reservations; their personalities were rather similar. As they chatted by the elevator, four people entered from outside, one with his head wrapped in bandages.

“Dad, it’s him! He’s the one who gave me all these injuries!” The bandaged man suddenly shouted.

Hearing the voice, Chu Feng frowned. It sounded familiar, but he couldn’t place it.

“Chu Feng, do you know this person?” Old Chen asked, his tone carrying a hint of anger.

“The voice rings a bell, but I can’t recall who it is,” Chu Feng replied, scratching his head.

“You punk, you’re the one who beat up my nephew. If you don’t hand over five million in medical expenses today, you’re not leaving this hospital alive. As for your girlfriend, I’ll sell her to a brothel, and your old man here—I’ll break his arms and legs,” said a man in a white vest with a dragon tattoo, swaggering up to Chu Feng.

“So you’re Zhang Xuefeng’s second uncle. If your nephew is such an idiot, you’re probably not much better,” Chu Feng retorted, realizing at once who the bandaged man was.

It was Zhang Xuefeng, whom Chu Feng had beaten up at the hospital entrance earlier that day. He hadn’t expected that Zhang Xuefeng would call for his second uncle.

“Young man, you must not want to keep your job as a doctor. If you don’t hand over ten million for medical expenses today, you’ll not only lose your job but your life too,” said a scholarly-looking middle-aged man beside Zhang Xuefeng, his words as ruthless as his appearance was refined.

“Then you must be Zhang Xuefeng’s father, the head of the Drug Administration Bureau. I don’t know your name—is it Zhang Idiot, perhaps?” Chu Feng didn’t take Zhang Xuefeng’s uncle or father seriously; to him, they were nothing more than petty clowns.

“In that case, there’s nothing more to discuss. You’ll have to come with us,” Zhang Xuefeng’s uncle said, waving his hand. In response, more than a dozen burly men entered. They all looked like gangland enforcers.

“Xiao Wang, call Zhang Zeming and tell him to get here immediately. If he can’t make it within five minutes, he can forget about being the city’s Party Secretary,” Old Chen ordered, seething with fury at such brazen threats.

Old Wang took out his phone and began dialing Li Zeming. Zhang Xuefeng’s father glanced at Old Chen, feeling as though he’d seen this old man somewhere before.

“Old Chen, Secretary Li says he’ll be here in two minutes—he’s just in a nearby ward, his son was hospitalized,” Old Wang reported after hanging up.

“Old man, even if you know the Party Secretary, he can’t save you. My cousin is the Drug Administration Bureau’s director,” the tattooed man sneered, dismissive of Old Chen’s words.

Just as the tattooed man finished speaking, Li Zeming and his wife appeared behind them. The moment Li Zeming saw the elderly man in the wheelchair, he was so startled he nearly collapsed.

“Old Chen, what brings you here? If I’d known you were in the hospital, I would’ve visited you,” Li Zeming said, clearly recognizing Old Chen, with whom he evidently had some connection.

“Xiao Li, that tattooed man just threatened to break my arms and legs,” Old Chen said, fixing his gaze on Li Zeming.

Hearing this, Li Zeming said nothing more. He turned and saw the Drug Administration Bureau’s director, Zhang Wen. Upon seeing Li Zeming, Zhang Wen immediately collapsed onto the floor, realizing from Li Zeming’s attitude that the old man in the wheelchair was no ordinary person.

“Sir, my brother was just joking earlier. Please don’t take it to heart—I apologize on his behalf,” Zhang Wen stammered, bowing his head.
