Chapter Twenty-six: Kneel and Call Me Father
Chu Feng and Liu Shuiqing entered the operating room, where Li Zeming was waiting. His wife sat beside him, quietly sobbing, while Deputy Director Sun stood nearby, anxiously waiting as well.
At this moment, his heart was in turmoil. Seeing the confidence radiating from Chu Feng, he couldn’t shake off a bad premonition. However, since the words had already been spoken, he couldn’t bring himself to take them back.
Inside the operating room, the doctor carefully explained Li Kun’s condition to Chu Feng, who then took out his silver needles and began the acupuncture. While inserting the needles, Chu Feng placed his watch on Li Kun’s waist; the hands on the dial spun wildly, completing fifty-five full rotations before finally coming to a halt.
After a while, Chu Feng retrieved all the silver needles from Li Kun’s body. The reason he had transferred life force from his watch to Li Kun was to stabilize his vital signs. Now that they were steady, the next step was to stop the bleeding in his chest cavity and repair his fractured rib.
“Director Liu, my part is done. The rest is up to your team,” Chu Feng said, putting away the silver needles and addressing Liu Shuiqing.
Liu Shuiqing immediately instructed the doctors to examine Li Kun. During the examination, they discovered that Li Kun’s vital signs had stabilized.
“Director, the patient’s vital signs are stable. We can proceed with the operation now, and the bleeding in his chest cavity has ceased,” the attending doctor reported, astonished by what he saw. He hadn’t expected that Chu Feng could stop the chest bleeding and stabilize the patient’s vital signs with just a few needles.
“All right, proceed according to protocol. There must be no mistakes,” Liu Shuiqing instructed, then left the operating room with Chu Feng. There was nothing more for Chu Feng to do; as long as the surgical team performed properly, everything would be fine.
After they stepped out, Li Zeming and his wife hurried over.
“Director Liu, how is my son? Did you save him?” Du Juan rushed forward, clutching Liu Shuiqing’s hand.
“Madam Li, your son’s condition is under control, and his vital signs are stable. As long as the surgery goes well, he’ll just need some time to recover,” Liu Shuiqing replied, maintaining his calm and measured tone despite Du Juan’s grip.
“But this is not my doing. The credit belongs to Miracle Doctor Chu. It was he who stabilized your son’s vital signs with acupuncture and stopped the bleeding in his chest,” Liu Shuiqing added, recounting everything honestly to the Li couple. He was no fool—giving credit to Chu Feng would surely improve their relationship.
“Miracle Doctor Chu, thank you for saving my son! If you ever need anything, just call me. I’ll do anything I can to help you!” Du Juan dropped to her knees before Chu Feng, kowtowing in gratitude.
Chu Feng and Liu Shuiqing hurriedly helped her up. Though he had saved her son, Chu Feng couldn’t accept such an overwhelming gesture.
Witnessing this scene, Deputy Director Sun tried to slip away quietly. He had just made a bet with Chu Feng—if he lost, he would have to kneel and call him “father.”
“Deputy Director Sun, where are you going? Have you forgotten our wager?” Chu Feng called out, stopping her in her tracks.
“I just felt a bit unwell and wanted to use the restroom. Doctor Chu, your medical skills are truly remarkable—I am in awe of you,” Deputy Director Sun began to flatter Chu Feng, not wanting to kneel and call him “father” in front of the hospital director.
“Why don’t you fulfill the bet first? The restroom can wait. Unless you’re trying to back out?” Chu Feng pressed, unwilling to let her off the hook easily. Back in Elder Chen’s room, she had yelled at him and tried to undermine him.
“Doctor Chu, you’re a magnanimous man; why not let this go? If we meet again, we can speak cordially,” Deputy Director Sun replied, her words soft yet carrying a hint of threat—implying her position as deputy director should make Chu Feng think twice.
“I’m sorry, but I’m the kind who likes to settle scores. We agreed that if I saved Li Kun’s life, you’d kneel and call me ‘father’ with three kowtows,” Chu Feng replied, repeating the terms of the bet for everyone to hear. Deputy Director Sun’s expression turned ugly.
If she had to kneel before the city committee secretary and the hospital director, calling a young man “father,” her reputation would be ruined. If word of this spread, she’d never be able to show her face again.
“What proof do you have? I don’t remember saying that,” Deputy Director Sun began to deny everything.
“Fortunately, I recorded our conversation. Since you don’t remember, let’s listen to it and jog your memory,” Chu Feng said, taking out his phone and playing the recording of their bet.
“This is fake! You forged it!” Deputy Director Sun, losing all composure, lunged forward to snatch the phone.
With a thud, Chu Feng kicked her away. He had never met someone so shameless.
“I’ll give you one last chance. Kneel, kowtow, and call me ‘father’ now, and I’ll let this go. Otherwise, don’t blame me for taking action,” Chu Feng’s voice grew icy. Had Deputy Director Sun admitted her mistake earlier, he wouldn’t have made her kneel. But since she remained stubborn, she needed to be taught a lesson.
“Doctor Sun, someone so untrustworthy cannot remain in our hospital. I’ll convene an expanded doctors’ meeting today to discuss whether you can continue as deputy director. Be prepared,” Liu Shuiqing declared. He didn’t want to offend Chu Feng over a deputy director, so he had to remove her to make his position clear.
“Chu Feng—no, father, I was wrong! Please forgive me just this once. I promise I’ll never make such a mistake again,” Deputy Director Sun scrambled up and kowtowed before Chu Feng. Her position as deputy director brought in hundreds of thousands in gifts each year; she couldn’t afford to lose it.
“You’d better say that to Director Liu; it’s useless to tell me,” Chu Feng replied, then turned and left. There was nothing left for him here.
