Chapter Eighty-Three: It Is Easy to Invite a Deity, but Hard to Send One Away
Chu Feng and company went straight to his office, where the people from the provincial department were already waiting.
The moment Chu Feng stepped inside, he nearly laughed aloud. Once again, he had run into an old nemesis—the leader was none other than Wang Feng, the same man who had nearly hauled him away last time. There was also another officer with him.
“Captain Wang, what a coincidence. I never expected we’d meet here again.” Chu Feng walked up to Wang Feng and said with a smile that did not reach his eyes.
“I didn’t expect to run into Doctor Chu here either. I wonder whether Doctor Chu has anything to do with the incident at the Jiahua Grand Hotel, where someone impersonated the police.”
Wang Feng had been ordered by the department head to come here and take away Jess and the woman with her child. As for the reason, he had not bothered to ask.
“That’s right. The one impersonating the police at Jiahua Grand Hotel was indeed me.” Wang Feng had not expected Chu Feng to admit it, and so readily at that.
“Then I’m afraid Doctor Chu will have to come with us. Impersonating the police is no small offense.” Wang Feng waved a hand, and the officer behind him took out a pair of handcuffs, intending to cuff Chu Feng.
Chu Feng reached out and grabbed him. The officer only felt as if he had been clamped in an iron vise; no matter how hard he struggled, he could not pull his hand free.
“Captain Wang, this is the Shanghai City Public Security Bureau, not your provincial department. Even if someone is to be arrested, it’s not your place to do the arresting.”
One of the bureau officials nearby could no longer stand it. Since Wang Feng had arrived, he had shown the bureau chief no respect at all. If Chu Feng were hauled away from his own office, word would spread, and then he, as bureau chief, would have no face left to stand here.
“Director Li, this man impersonated a police officer and caused trouble at Jiahua Grand Hotel. And according to eyewitnesses, his accomplice was carrying a gun. You didn’t arrest him, and you allowed him to move freely around the Public Security Bureau. If this is reported to the provincial department, you’ll surely be disciplined.”
Wang Feng pressed his attack without letting up, facing off against Li in open confrontation. Backed by the provincial public security head, he had no fear of him at all.
“Director Li, I think Captain Wang has a point. Since you’re not arresting me, I’ll go with Captain Wang to the provincial department. But before I go with you, I have one thing to tell you, Captain Wang: it’s easy to invite a god, but hard to send him away.”
Chu Feng’s meaning was plain enough: easy to take me away, but not so easy to send me back.
“Xiao Chen, cuff him right now. I’d like to see who you can call to get you out of this.” Wang Feng paid no attention to Chu Feng’s warning. He had already investigated Chu Feng’s background and knew he did not know any big shots.
“Hand over that foreigner you detained, and that mother and child too. Those are all people the commissioner ordered me to take away. Here is the transfer order.”
Having caught Chu Feng, Wang Feng still did not want to leave; he even intended to take away the people Chu Feng had detained.
“That won’t do. That foreigner is suspected of kidnapping one of our citizens and of concealing narcotics. We have already opened a formal investigation into this case, and you cannot take it over yet.”
The reason Li did not stop Wang Feng from arresting Chu Feng was that he knew Chu Feng had a special identity. Even if he were taken to the provincial department, nothing would happen to him.
But if that foreigner and the mother and child were taken away by Wang Feng, there was no telling whether Wang Feng might simply let the foreigner go somewhere along the way.
“This is a transfer order issued by the provincial department. If you refuse to comply, I’ll file a complaint with the provincial department as soon as I get back, and I’ll recommend that they remove you from your post as public security bureau chief immediately.”
Wang Feng kept leaning on the provincial public security commissioner to pressure Li. He was nothing more than a lackey bullying others with borrowed power.
“Suit yourself. I’ve already sent people to search the rooms at Jiahua Grand Hotel. I believe there will be results soon enough.”
“If you insist on taking Doctor Chu away, then go ahead and do it. Don’t come crying that you got the runs after eating our food and say our provisions are poor. We’re not like you people.”
Li, in his own office, was unusually tough this time. It was different from before; this time everyone in the bureau listened to him. Last time, he had not brought any men with him.
“Hmph. Let’s go.” Wang Feng gave a cold snort, then took Chu Feng away.
Shanghai City was the provincial capital of the East Sea Province, and the provincial department was not far from the public security bureau. Chu Feng rode in the police car, and within just a little over ten minutes, he had arrived at the provincial public security department.
Once brought into the bureau, Chu Feng was locked in a room by Captain Wang. His phone had been taken, but his identification papers had not.
“Doctor Chu, we’re both reasonable people, so I won’t beat around the bush. As long as you sign your name here, I guarantee you won’t suffer any physical pain.”
Wang Feng produced a document from behind him and placed it in front of Chu Feng, asking him to sign.
Chu Feng studied it carefully, and good heavens—if he really signed this, he would not be shot a hundred times too many.
The document accused Chu Feng of two major crimes: trafficking more than a dozen kilograms of narcotics, and causing the deaths of dozens of people at Shanghai Hospital for the purpose of revenge against society.
“Captain Wang, you really think highly of me. Just the first charge alone, trafficking dozens of kilograms of narcotics, would be enough to have me shot a hundred times over. But I’m in a good mood today, so I won’t quarrel with you. Call your commissioner over. I have something to say to him.”
Chu Feng saw no need to waste effort on Wang Feng. The man behind Wang Feng was the provincial public security commissioner, the one who had been looking for trouble with Chu Feng all along.
“Our commissioner is not someone you can just say you want to see and then see. Who do you think you are? Sign this obediently, or don’t blame me for using force. Don’t refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit.”
Wang Feng sat there with the swagger of a hoodlum, one leg propped on the desk. He had no intention of asking Chu Feng anything; he only wanted him to sign quickly and confess.
“Since you’re unwilling to bring him here, I’ll wait here. Your commissioner will come looking for me soon enough.”
Chu Feng’s tone was full of confidence. There was no need for him to waste words with Wang Feng here.
“Xiao Chen, shut the door.”
Wang Feng ordered the officer beside him to close the door, then drew an electric baton from behind him.
Buzzing softly, Wang Feng slowly approached Chu Feng, pressing the switch as he walked. The baton crackled with a sharp electric hiss.
“I’ll ask you one more time. Are you signing or not?”
When Wang Feng reached Chu Feng, he thrust the paper and pen in front of him.
Chu Feng glanced at Wang Feng sideways, his eyes full of contempt. For a man like him to have risen to the rank of captain in the provincial department, he must have had connections pulling strings for him.
Wang Feng then pressed the baton forward, trying to jab it into Chu Feng’s clothes. That way, there would be no visible wound on Chu Feng’s body; and even if he accused them of torture during interrogation, without an injury there would be no proof, and Wang Feng would deny everything.
