Chapter 78: Seeking Proof
Old Jin was someone who had never experienced the schemes and intrigues of the world, which was why he chose to believe what Fierce Sun had told him.
“So what am I supposed to do now? My wife and child have been taken by them, and I don’t have the courage to face Old Chen. Are you telling me I can’t even die?”
His words were weak, and there was no longer any light in his eyes—only a deathly resolve. All he could think of now was dying; nothing else mattered.
“Today is Thursday. Wait for their call tomorrow. When it gets close to the appointed time, you must call me. I can try to have someone from the technical department trace their location.”
Chu Feng pondered for a moment and decided it was best to see if they could rescue Old Jin’s wife and child first. If they could be saved, there’d be time enough to deal with the rest later.
“Did the person who contacted you ever tell you their codename or name? If you know any of that, it would be of great help to us.” Chu Feng had been about to leave, but suddenly remembered the Sun Hunter assassin he had captured, who had a codename.
“He told me his codename is Black Dragon. If you check the assassin rankings, he’s in the top hundred.” Old Jin revealed everything he knew to Chu Feng, holding nothing back—he could finally see a glimmer of hope.
“Get some rest here, and don’t do anything foolish again. If you really do die, your wife and child wouldn’t survive the day. Think about that.”
Before leaving, Chu Feng feared Old Jin might try to kill himself again, so he told him these words, hoping he’d reconsider. Ma Han, meanwhile, borrowed someone from Black Tiger’s squad to watch over Old Jin and prevent another suicide attempt.
Chu Feng had Old Wang and Ma Han stand guard outside, making sure no one disturbed Old Chen’s sleep, while he drove to the detention center. He was going to see Mad Dog, hoping to learn something about Black Dragon from him.
Before entering the detention center, Chu Feng bought a bottle of liquor and a roast duck—if he wanted to have a real conversation with Mad Dog, he needed to offer something in return. After all, you couldn’t buy roast chicken and wine in the detention center.
The police there brought Mad Dog into a small room and even prepared a little table for him.
“You didn’t expect me to visit you, did you?”
Chu Feng handed the duck and wine to Mad Dog, then sat down and lit a cigarette. Mad Dog, seeing the food and drink, didn’t hesitate—he tore open the packaging, uncapped the bottle, and ate and drank at the same time.
He already knew he didn’t have long to live. Every extra day was a gift, and a good meal was a rare treat now. If he acted picky, Chu Feng wouldn’t offer him any food at all—and might even torment him again.
“Ask whatever you want. As for our headquarters, I’ve already told you. I hope you won’t go and throw your life away—the situation there is complicated. Even if the Chinese military backs you up, they wouldn’t send in fighter jets.”
Mad Dog thought Chu Feng didn’t believe what he’d said, so he repeated himself, urging Chu Feng not to seek death at their headquarters.
“Is there someone in your organization called Black Dragon? And did he capture a young woman and a child?”
Bang! Hearing Chu Feng’s words, Mad Dog dropped the bottle in shock. He had no idea how Chu Feng knew about Black Dragon.
“Yes, there is such a person. He’s practically our mercenary group’s deputy commander—an expert in martial arts and skilled with twin pistols.” Mad Dog quickly recovered from his shock and told Chu Feng everything he knew about Black Dragon.
“As for whether he’s kidnapped a woman and child, I can’t say. His rank is so high, I rarely see him—only at group gatherings have I met him a few times.”
Within the Fierce Sun Mercenary Group, Black Dragon was second only to the leader, commanding thousands. His movements were mysterious, and he never needed to report to anyone.
“Do you know how to contact him? I mean, your usual ways of reaching each other, or any codes you use?”
A bold idea crossed Chu Feng’s mind: what if this deputy commander of Fierce Sun Mercenaries was actually inside China?
“I don’t know that. When I’m sent on missions, I only contact our captain—I don’t have the rank to reach the deputy commander directly.”
Fierce Sun Mercenaries had many strict rules, which was why they’d managed to survive so long as an organization.
“Tomorrow I’ll be speaking with your Black Dragon. I’ll record the conversation—you can listen and tell me if it’s your deputy commander’s voice.”
Chu Feng hadn’t expected the assassin he’d caught from Fierce Sun was just a small fry. Still, the man might be useful, so he decided to let him live a few more days.
The next morning, after breakfast, Chu Feng went to prepare medicine for Old Chen. These things he had to do himself; he didn’t trust anyone else with them.
When the medicine was ready, he made sure Old Chen drank it, then went to Old Jin’s room. Typically, Black Dragon would call Old Jin every Friday morning, though the timing varied.
When Chu Feng entered, several police officers were already in the room—since they needed to trace Black Dragon’s location, the technical investigation team was essential. They could trace the assassin’s whereabouts through the call.
Ring ring—the moment Chu Feng sat down, Old Jin’s phone rang. He didn’t pick up immediately but waited for the officers’ signal before answering.
“How did things go? Is that old man dead yet? I’m running out of patience,” came a cold voice from the other end.
“I’ve already poisoned his medicine—he’ll be dead in a few days. Where are my wife and child? Let me speak to them.”
Old Jin repeated what Chu Feng had taught him—anything to stall for time, so the technical team could locate Black Dragon.
“Daddy, when are you coming to take us home? This uncle bought me yummy food and fun things, but he won’t let us leave.”
A young, innocent voice came from the phone—it must have been Old Jin’s child. From the child’s words, it was clear that Black Dragon had treated him well and hadn’t hurt him.
