Chapter 117: The Medium Flare
Chapter 116: Flame Bombardment Formation
“Could it be that this thing doesn’t have one…”
Just as Liu Chuang was beginning to think there was no self-destruct button at all, he casually shoved aside a Taotie corpse and spotted the conspicuous red button beneath a glass cover.
The curse that had reached his lips was swallowed back down. He viciously kicked the corpse twice, then punched through the glass.
Before long, Liu Chuang stood on the deck of the flagship, completely at a loss. The ship was about to self-destruct—what was he supposed to do? Why had no one given him a thruster as well? Now that he regretted it, was there still time to stop the process?
It was not until a gunboat passed by that Liu Chuang realized he had found his chance to escape the explosion.
Using the little device on his wrist that resembled a web-shooter, he swung himself onto the gunboat.
He stood there as though on a speech platform. The Taotie behind him, who had raised their axes against him, were very cooperative as they exploded, the blaze reflecting crimson across the black armor on his back.
Liu Chuang desperately resisted the urge to look back. A true man never looked back at an explosion. After single-handedly destroying a flagship, he had to preserve the style of the moment. Otherwise, he would be letting down all the Taotie he had hacked to death.
The airship carrying Liu Chuang launched a surprise attack toward Blade Seven, gradually merging into the enormous formation of airships. To Liu Chuang, they looked just like moths flying into a flame.
Their fearless courage was admirable, but unfortunately, they were invaders. He could not entertain them with fine wine—only with blades and axes.
What happened next further solidified his opinion of the Taotie, even though Liu Chuang had already flattened himself against the gunboat as much as possible to conceal his figure.
The gunboat was only so large. How could they possibly fail to see him? Messages began refreshing rapidly across the channel.
The gunboats that had been charging forward suddenly came to a halt, turning their cannons toward Liu Chuang lying on top of one of them.
At first, they merely began charging their weapons. Then, when an armored Taotie was launched into the air, the cannons of the surrounding gunboats instantly flared with dazzling light.
Liu Chuang understood what was happening the moment the gunboats stopped. He immediately began contacting his brother Yang. If they fired a full barrage at him, he would not be injured, but it would certainly hurt.
In the eyes of the Taotie, this black-armored super soldier could not fly. To kill Liu Chuang, they were charging their weapons upward.
Then, without warning, a silver-armored super soldier appeared beside him.
More importantly, this silver-armored warrior had wings.
Every Taotie understood that if they did not fire immediately, they would lose their chance. They could not allow the military merit already within their grasp to fly away.
The moment Yun Yang appeared, he drew Xiaoyi without the slightest hesitation. Liu Chuang immediately understood and entered.
Yun Yang did not even glance at the Taotie airships. With a casual slash, he cut an opening in the vessel beneath him, then his body faded.
Before Yun Yang could complete the teleportation, the energy shells exploded. When he reappeared, he was already beside Qilin.
Yun Yang glanced at the stains covering him. He was an utter mess.
He said something to Xiaoyi and asked her to send Liu Chuang out.
“Hahahaha, Yangzi, thanks for the ash on your face.”
Liu Chuang hooked an arm around Yun Yang’s neck and wiped a handful of soot across his face.
Nearby, flashes continued to burst from Qilin’s gun muzzle without pause. Yet she kept glancing back from time to time, while her slightly trembling shoulders revealed her current mood.
Yun Yang looked at the soot on Liu Chuang’s hand and instinctively wiped at his own face. Seeing that there really was ash there, he muttered,
“Aren’t they using energy shells? How could there be ash?”
Liu Chuang could see his mouth moving, but no sound came through the channel. He could only spread his hands helplessly.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.”
Yun Yang waved it off as well. He glanced at the battlefield, then his figure vanished.
He flashed across the battlefield three times before returning to Liu Chuang’s side.
He was carrying three angels, one on his back and two in his arms. Their bodies were drenched in blood, and all three were unconscious.
No one knew how he had managed to bring back three angels with only two hands. Before Liu Chuang could say anything, Yun Yang entered the virtual space directly.
These angels were more seriously injured than the previous one. After removing their silver armor, Yun Yang found that none of them had suffered penetrating wounds. They were covered instead in horrifying slashes.
Yun Yang had no time to think about anything else. He called over Xiaoyi, who was watching the three angelic young women with a worried expression, and gestured for her assistance.
At the fastest possible speed, he sent them into the medical pods. Before leaving, he glanced at the angel who had been brought in first.
She had nearly recovered. Her bright eyes were darting around inside the medical pod, though from that angle she could not see what was happening nearby.
The medical pod’s effect was excellent, and Yun Yang did not look any longer. After all, she was wearing only underwear. He had to avert his eyes out of propriety.
He reminded Xiaoyi to keep an eye on the angels’ condition, then left the virtual space.
The instant he emerged, he heard Liu Chuang say angrily,
“Yangzi, send me to the battlefield. The angel girls are all fighting. As a grown man, I can’t just sit here and watch.”
“You can’t fly. Here, use this for the time being.”
Yun Yang took out the Silver Blade flying sword. With a thought, under the control of his genetic engine, it slowly transformed into a flying disc. The disc was extraordinarily thin—calling it a blade would not have been inaccurate.
Liu Chuang nodded. He immediately covered the Silver Blade disc with his dark energy. Once linked to it, he flew crookedly toward the battlefield.
Seeing Liu Chuang’s flying posture, Yun Yang’s eyelid twitched. He suddenly regretted allowing him to go to the battlefield like this.
At this rate, Liu Chuang seemed destined only to be beaten. After all, every warrior over there was a flying unit.
But Liu Chuang had already left, and Yun Yang could not call him back. He could only remind himself to pay closer attention to Liu Chuang’s condition later.
Suddenly, all the angels on the battlefield disengaged from combat. Before long, they had gathered together.
The sudden development startled Yun Yang. He thought they had been suppressed and were regrouping as a result.
He quickly entered the battlefield channel and heard Angel Leng’s voice.
“Let them come closer before attacking. We’ll try to eliminate at least ten of those male-angel scum in one wave of flame bombardment.”
“Yes, Sister Leng.”
The other angels answered one after another.
Angel Leng and Angel Chase flew at the very front. Behind them were second-generation angels wearing helmets. Naturally, helmets were merely auxiliary equipment, and some angels confident in their own strength chose not to wear them.
When the male-angel scum saw that the angel girls, who had always fought several opponents at once, had formed up, they hesitated and dared not advance.
The angels merely drew their flaming swords, raised them above their heads, and quietly waited for the enemy’s next move.
The male-angel scum discussed the matter in their combat channel. They had fought for so long without managing to kill a single angel girl.
They had lost quite a few brothers, yet they could not understand why, despite being second-generation warriors as well, the angel girls seemed to fight with far greater ease than they did.
As for that question, an auxiliary with a heart for dealing damage probably had the greatest authority to answer it.
Finally, the oldest of the male-angel scum spoke.
“We’ve fought this long without killing a single angel girl, and the three we had the best chance of killing were even rescued. We’ll have trouble explaining this to the King when we return. Spread out a little. Attack!”
As soon as he finished speaking, the male angel charged forward at the head of the assault. The others suppressed their hesitation, drew their swords, and followed.
In the angels’ communications channel, there was only one command.
“Prepare. Concentrate fire on the front.”
When the male-angel scum had advanced to within five hundred meters, all the angels suddenly swung their swords.
More than a dozen dazzling golden pillars of light, carrying an aura of destruction, struck the enemy’s front line.
Under the astonished gazes of the male-angel scum, the attacks instantly hit more than ten of them.
Before long, the flame bombardment ended like divine punishment, leaving a vast empty area where the attack had landed.
The battlefield fell into an eerie silence. The male-angel scum who had been charging stopped in their tracks. Even Sumali, who had been fighting Ge Xiaolun, halted and turned toward the location where the bombardment had erupted.
A trace of fear rose in his heart, and horror flickered through his eyes.
Had the angel girls really become this powerful?
He remembered that thirty thousand years ago, the female angels had needed superior numbers to win the War of the Furious Sea. Now, they were suppressing the warriors of the Heavenly Palace.
Then he felt relieved. After all, more than twenty thousand years had passed. The warriors of the Heavenly Palace had been sent to a remote and impoverished star region, where technology had not advanced in the slightest. Under such circumstances, this outcome was only natural.
Seeing the miserable state of the Heavenly Palace warriors, then recalling the extravagant lifestyle of the Heavenly Palace era, strengthened Sumali’s resolve to restore the Heavenly Palace to its former glory.
The male-angel scum on the battlefield had been intimidated, while the angels were busy sorting through redundant data in their genetic engines. For the moment, neither side made any move.
Yun Yang and Qilin, however, were too far away to be affected by the spectacle and remained focused.
Qilin shifted her aim. A flash of muzzle fire erupted, and a Godslayer-1 round struck Sumali directly in the forehead. The powerful impact staggered him.
His forehead instantly swelled red. Sumali erupted in fury.
That sniper was still alive? Were all the warriors he had sent after her useless?
He had fought the Power of the Galaxy for so long without being injured, yet he had been ambushed by a sniper rifle. Sumali declared that the ancient god-slaying title he bore could not be desecrated.
He looked at the male-angel scum beside him and pointed toward Qilin’s position. They immediately understood, scattering and vanishing from Qilin’s field of vision at top speed.
“KILL!”
Sumali steadied himself and raised his sword to attack Ge Xiaolun again, while roaring through the combat channel.
As his shout rang in the ears of the male-angel scum, they once again charged toward the angels, who had remained motionless.
The moment the enemy began moving, the stillness of the battlefield shattered, and chaos returned.
Most of the time, several male-angel scum chased after and hacked at a single angel, while the angels could only flee in confusion, occasionally turning back to release a cross-shaped flaming sword wave.
That was the situation among the second-generation angels. Chase and Leng, as third-generation warriors, each pursued several male-angel scum at once.
Those being pursued also fled wildly, occasionally unleashing a three-stage shield-breaking assault.
This was why, despite the battle having gone on for so long, casualties on both sides remained relatively low.
It could be said that on this battlefield, Yun Yang, the auxiliary, had already become the primary damage dealer. He simply did not realize it, because in his eyes, the sniper beside him was the true damage-dealing unit.
Qilin, however, spent most of her time providing support rather than killing. The male-angel scum moved too quickly, making it difficult to strike their vital points.
