Chapter Ninety-One: The Wicked Angel's Good Deed
Chapter Ninety-One: The Evil Angel’s Good Deed
In the monitoring room, the clerks had all been tied to their chairs. Though nothing was stuffed in their mouths, their lips were pressed so tightly together that they could only make muffled sounds and speak no more. One by one, they stared at the surveillance feeds on the computer with grief and indignation, utterly at a loss.
They had fallen into this state after being ambushed by the demons through wormholes. To the demons, they were no different from helpless babes, so the attackers had not bothered to kill them—only knocked them out and bound them.
After struggling for a while, one of the sturdier clerks stood up, ran to a red cabinet, opened the lid with his nose, and then slammed his forehead against a button marked with a bell.
The steel doors of the armory instantly sealed shut, and a shrill alarm sounded once more. But the demons still inside, busily working away with great enthusiasm, showed no reaction at all; even their pace did not change.
Outside the armory, five demons were still flying about at random. Just as the soldiers were growing somewhat irritable, the piercing alarm rang out behind them. By force of their usual training, half of the troops on the line immediately split off and ran back at top speed.
After assembling at the armory entrance, the soldiers raised their weapons and stood guard, each of them fully on alert.
A middle-aged man who looked like an officer nodded, then clattered out a string of passwords on the keypad by the door and followed with a fingerprint scan.
The metal doors slowly opened. At that moment, the demons inside noticed as well, and each of them glanced back with lingering regret at the remaining missiles.
Then they all turned and walked into the wormholes opening before them.
The soldiers, braced for battle, saw ten of their number step forward the moment the doors opened, pull tear gas from their belts, and hurl it straight inside.
Afterward, they all took out their gas masks. Once everyone had them on, the doorway was just wide enough for a single person to bend and pass through.
The soldiers filed in one by one, and when they saw the missile storage area inside, wrecked and scattered in disarray, they were somewhat baffled. But there was no one there, and no timed bomb either. It seemed the thieves had merely come to steal missiles.
How exactly had they been stolen? Without launcher trucks or firing racks, how were they supposed to use them?
While everyone was grumbling to themselves, two bomb disposal experts in full gear hurried over and asked breathlessly, “The bomb, where is the bomb?”
“There isn’t one. There’s no bomb,” the middle-aged officer who had opened the door said, still rather dazed.
Several soldiers went to the monitoring room and found the subdued clerks. They quickly untied them, but discovered that they still could not speak.
That, however, was not important. The same sturdier clerk immediately grabbed a pen and scrawled furiously on the paper: A group of demons. They only moved the missiles. We must have been ambushed.
The officer nodded and issued orders for everyone to tally the losses. Meanwhile, the bomb disposal experts searched every corner, afraid that some explosive device had been planted.
On the Demon One, Atto was carving watermelon, while the little demons who had taken part in the operation sat upright and proper, waiting for the slices he would give them.
After each had been handed a watermelon, Atto cut one for himself as well and raised it as if making a toast. “Brothers, well done this time. When the queen returns and sees the fireworks you prepared for her, she will surely be pleased.”
“For the queen!” the demons roared.
After the little demons had all left, Black Wind looked at Atto in disbelief and said, “Atto, you’ve changed. You used to never lie to demons.”
Atto waved a hand, unconcerned. “How am I lying? It really is for the queen to see.”
When A Tai heard that, he too wore a look of deep disdain and said coolly, “I only hope that after the fireworks are over, you won’t be beaten to death by those brothers of yours.”
“I won’t. I won’t. I’m a god now. I’m not afraid.” Atto still looked utterly indifferent. In his heart, he thought that as long as he could win the queen’s heart, being beaten to death would be worth it.
And if he couldn’t win it, then as long as the queen was happy, that would be enough too. In any case, now that he had become a god, they wouldn’t be able to kill him.
Feresa, Northern Palace of Anisida.
Anisida, leaning on her chin in thought, suddenly sensed someone entering.
“May I talk to you?” the visitor said.
Instantly alert, Anisida looked at the person with some confusion and said, “You... you are the one from today?”
After a rather unpleasant conversation, Morgana was driven out of the sleeping quarters.
But the moment she returned to her tent, she was attacked, and her already foul mood became even worse.
Spreading her wings, she rose into the air. With a sweep of her right hand, a demon claw appeared behind her.
And Angel Yan, who had been quietly observing from the sidelines, also appeared atop the castle. The moment she put on her helmet, it was obvious she was ready to start a fight at the slightest provocation.
Morgana recalled all she had done since coming to Earth and realized she had only succeeded in one thing; everything else had been half-baked at best, which was immensely irritating.
Then she wondered whether she might as well ruin something for the angels too. If she could not corrupt Anisida, then she would at least sow discord between them.
She gave Angel Yan a provocative look and said, “Angels are very good at brainwashing and seducing men, aren’t they, Yan the Thunder War God?”
At that, Angel Yan’s pretty face darkened. She too soared into the sky and faced Morgana from afar.
“Isn’t it demons who are supposed to beguile people’s hearts? And don’t put it so unpleasantly. True love will last forever.”
After delivering that forceful rebuttal to Morgana’s slander, Angel Yan said no more. Silver blades appeared around her, and thunder rolled across the heavens as dark clouds gathered and lightning flashed.
Morgana gave no reply either. Her demon claw withstood the silver blades’ slicing, seized Angel Yan directly, and hurled her before Anisida. Laughing, she said, “Hahaha, see that? The kingdoms of your believers are all under angelic surveillance. When things reach a certain point, heh-heh-heh.”
Angel Yan was just about to rise and fight again, but Morgana did not wait for her. She opened a micro-wormhole and left this peculiar planet still trapped in the age of cold steel.
Having tripped Angel Yan up, Morgana was in a good mood. She hummed an unrecognizable little tune all the way back to the Demon One without stopping.
Angel Yan stood up but said nothing. Seeing the angel of her nation’s imagination appear before her in reality, Anisida clenched her teeth and knelt before Angel Yan.
“My apologies for the offense, Thunder War God, Angel Yan.”
Angel Yan waved it off indifferently and said, “That woman just now was the Demon Queen. She has been here for quite some time. I came specifically to protect you, as a believer.”
“Thank you, Holy Kaisa. I am deeply honored,” Anisida said as she rose, her face full of reverence.
Angel Yan nodded and said nothing more. With a wave of her hand, she restored the room she had just damaged.
Watching Angel Yan slowly vanish, Anisida thought for a moment, then summoned a guard and said, “Issue a proclamation. Say that the Demon King Morgana attempted a night raid on the queen but failed, and that angels and evil are irreconcilable.”
Meanwhile, Morgana had just used the angels’ great worm bridge to return to the solar system. She directly contacted the Demon One and told the demons aboard to open a gate for her so she could go back.
But before she could even make the dark communication call, a wormhole appeared before her. She glanced at it in some confusion; the demonic aura and style were unmistakably there.
Figuring the demons would never harm her, Morgana did not linger. She stepped straight into the wormhole and arrived outside the Demon One.
Just as she spread her wings to fly, a line of text suddenly appeared upon the temporal barrier of the Demon One:
“Welcome back, Queen Morgana. Please enjoy Atto’s specially prepared fireworks display.”
Immediately afterward, missile after missile rose into the sky. Thanks to the modifications made by the demon engineers, each one burst into a brilliant bloom of firework light.
Morgana was delighted by the display, while the faces of the demons who had moved the missiles grew even darker than before.
“So Atto was being so agreeable today because he was waiting for us here.”
“Can this be endured?”
“It cannot!”
“How about we beat him up?”
“But Atto is a god-body. We probably can’t lay a hand on him.”
“A god-body is even better. If he can’t be killed, then we can beat him to death in spirit.”
“My friend, that makes perfect sense. Let me go fetch my chainsaw.”
And Atto, unaware that he had already been set up, flew to his queen’s side and said hesitantly, “My Queen, I... I prepared fireworks for you. Do you like them?”
“Yes, I do. The fireworks are very special. Only our demons would think to use missiles as fireworks.” Morgana smiled and flew up to level with his shoulder, patting it in encouragement.
He glanced at the queen’s height, then at his own, and suddenly realized a terrible truth.
At his present height, did he really have any chance at all? Should he recalibrate his genes and return himself to a more normal stature?
He would have to ask A Tai when he got back. He did not understand it very well, but it ought to be possible.
There were a little over a hundred small missiles in all, and they were all gone in less than a minute. During that minute, Atto did not speak; as always, he merely stood silently behind his queen.
This time, however, he lowered himself a little, trying his best to remain on the same level as her.
Morgana noticed it too, though she did not care. After all, did her demon subordinates not have to have the occasional fit of madness?
Morgana said she was already used to it. Compared with the last time, when they had stolen one missile and died in a heap without even getting it, this time not a single demon had died, and they had stolen a whole pile. That was already a great surprise to her.
Even their queen was pleasantly surprised, so the little demons could hardly not be excited to the point of cardiac arrest. A little spasm from Atto was nothing.
After watching the fireworks to the end, Morgana slipped into a micro-wormhole and returned straight to her bedroom.
Atto, watching her disappear, thought in speechless exasperation: Couldn’t the queen have opened a gate for me too?
