Chapter 133: To Think It Was a Spy
In truth, Gu Xiangnan had the ability to treat Huang Ying. However, the ambulance had already arrived. If he were to prevent her from being admitted to the hospital, his behavior would appear highly suspicious and could potentially bring him unnecessary trouble.
The doctors declared Zhang Hongmei dead on arrival. Huang Ying’s condition was also critical, her life hanging by a thread. By now, it was morning, and major news agencies were scrambling to report this incident as their top headline.
Seeing the news, Su Hanyan called in a panic. After confirming that both Gu Xiangnan and Zi Xiaoyin were safe and sound, she finally exhaled in relief. Given the gravity of the situation, she decided to cancel her work schedule for the day. Accompanied by Zhang Baolian and Wang Mei, she immediately set off back to Jiangning City.
Yang Dianfeng and a group of his subordinates stood guard in the hospital corridor. He had received reports that morning claiming that ruthless thugs had attempted to kidnap Gu Xiangnan, but his intuition told him the matter was far more complex. Consequently, he had come personally with his men to ensure Gu Xiangnan’s safety and prevent any further assassination attempts.
Zi Xiaoyin sat outside the emergency room, her eyes red and swollen, her expression one of profound grief. Losing her mother and her best friend at the same time was an unbearable double blow.
"Doctor, how is she doing?"
As the lights in the operating room went out, the doctor pushed the door open, looking exhausted. Zi Xiaoyin rushed forward to ask, and Gu Xiangnan stepped closer as well.
The doctor wiped the sweat from his brow and said with a look of regret, "It is truly severe. The burn area covers 80 percent of her body: 30 percent first-degree, 30 percent deep second-degree, and 20 percent third-degree." The doctor rattled off a string of medical terminology before concluding, "This is a severe burn, and furthermore..."
"Doctor, please, just tell us! You’re driving me crazy with suspense," Yang Dianfeng urged impatiently from the side.
"Even if the patient survives, her skin's ability to regulate sweat has been destroyed, there is a high risk of infection, and the future recovery process will be extremely long. In short, the chances of her survival are not high. You should notify her family as soon as possible so they can prepare themselves."
Yang Dianfeng was anxious. Gu Xiangnan had already explained the entire sequence of events to him. Upon learning that Huang Ying had nearly lost her life trying to save Gu Xiangnan’s godmother, a sense of deep admiration for her welled up within him.
"Doctor, I am willing to pay a high price to bring in every burn specialist in Jiangning City. No matter what, please, you must save her!" It was rare for Yang Dianfeng to plead with anyone.
The doctor shook his head helplessly. "We have done everything in our power, but in a case like this, even the gods would find it difficult to intervene."
As the underground king of Jiangning City, Yang Dianfeng’s influence was not to be underestimated. With him personally overseeing the situation at the hospital, the staff naturally dared not slack off. They had already gathered the best doctors for multiple consultations and had truly exhausted all efforts.
Zi Xiaoyin pleaded with tears in her voice, "Doctor, please, I beg you to find another way."
The doctor sighed, seemingly moved by their sincerity. "Very well, we will continue to try." With that, he turned and returned to the emergency room.
Gu Xiangnan felt a growing sense of urgency. If the hospital continued with this course of treatment, Huang Ying would surely perish. He had to find a way to take her home and treat her using his own methods. He needed a reasonable excuse.
Not long after, all the doctors emerged from the emergency room. "I am sorry, we have done all we can. You should begin making funeral arrangements."
Hearing this, Zi Xiaoyin nearly fainted. Gu Xiangnan was quick-witted and caught her before she fell. They all entered the emergency room. The instruments attached to Huang Ying had been disconnected. Just as Zi Xiaoyin prepared to bid her final farewell, Gu Xiangnan pulled her back and signaled for Yang Dianfeng to come over.
He whispered, "Take her home immediately. I can save her!"
Both were stunned, but Yang Dianfeng reacted quickly, immediately ordering his men to carry Huang Ying to the vehicle.
By this time, Su Hanyan had arrived in Jiangning City and called Gu Xiangnan to ask which hospital he was at. He told her to go directly to her home, as they would be there shortly.
Gu Xiangnan’s Dingshang villa had been burned down, and with the authorities still investigating the scene, it was no place to conduct treatment. To protect Gu Xiangnan, Yang Dianfeng had brought many of his men and driven a minibus. Now, by folding the seats down, it provided enough space for Huang Ying to lie flat.
Perhaps it was a final surge of energy before death, but Huang Ying opened her eyes. A hissing sound escaped her throat, though she could not speak. Zi Xiaoyin leaned over and asked, "Sister, what do you need?"
Huang Ying stared fixedly at Zi Xiaoyin’s mobile phone. "Do you want to make a call?" Zi Xiaoyin asked. Huang Ying blinked. "Who do you want to call?" Huang Ying could not speak, her mouth moving slightly. After guessing for a while, they finally deciphered her lip movements.
"Is it your mother?" After a few attempts, Zi Xiaoyin asked this, and Huang Ying finally blinked in confirmation. But her own phone was back at Gu Xiangnan’s villa. How could one ignore the final wish of a dying person?
Gu Xiangnan told them to proceed to Su Hanyan’s house while he returned to the villa to retrieve Huang Ying’s phone and, incidentally, some medicinal supplies. He switched to another one of Yang Dianfeng’s cars and soon returned to the villa. A large crowd of media remained at the entrance, and the police had just finished their investigation and removed the caution tape.
Gu Xiangnan rushed into the courtyard. The house was in total disarray; where could Huang Ying’s phone be? He tried calling her number, and sure enough, a ringtone sounded from inside. It turned out that when Huang Ying had been vomiting in the restroom, her phone had slid under the sink.
He retrieved the phone and hung up his own. In that careless glance, he saw a message pop up on Huang Ying’s screen. It was in Japanese.
Gu Xiangnan’s heart tightened instantly. He quickly used his own phone to take a picture of the message content and downloaded a translation app. The message read:
[Huang Ying, the Dibang family of the United States has sent the second-in-command of their mercenary group to kill Gu Xiangnan. Seize the opportunity to assist them. Additionally, Otsuka Shunsuke has gone missing; the Association has decided to send an acting president. Remember to contact him.]
Gu Xiangnan felt as though he had fallen into a frozen abyss. Huang Ying was actually in league with the Japanese! Moreover, she had been staying by his sister's side, waiting for an opportunity to eliminate him.
But then, why save his godmother last night? Was it a bitter ruse to win his trust? Yet, who would risk their life for such a ruse?
Gu Xiangnan’s mind was in turmoil. Should he save her, or should he not?
Yang Dianfeng had already arrived at Su Hanyan’s house. They carefully carried Huang Ying to an upstairs room. Checking his watch, he realized it was getting late. Yang Dianfeng called his men: "Drive faster! We are waiting here to save a life!"
His subordinate replied stutteringly, "Boss, Brother Nan went into the villa and hasn't come out yet. We haven't even started the car!"
