The officers on the scene were a little exasperated.

Though they felt he was boasting, they had to admit he had every reason to do so—he truly had the skills to back it up. There was nothing they could do; the man was simply that capable.

“All right, everyone, let’s disperse and get back to work. Tonight, dinner’s on me to celebrate Huihui’s recovery,” Wang Lixin, not quite able to hide his amusement, smiled at Chen Yufeng and then called out to the officers. Usually stern, his face was now alight with joy.

Wang Hui’s illness had always weighed heavily on him. Now that she had recovered, he felt as though a great burden had been lifted, and deep contentment settled over him.

“Thank you, Director Wang. Congratulations!” the officers responded before going back to their duties. Wang Hui had always been an outstanding officer; now that she had recovered, her colleagues were naturally happy for her.

Wang Lixin was now deeply grateful to Chen Yufeng, and he admired him immensely. Not only was the young man skilled in combat, but his medical abilities bordered on the miraculous. He truly was a legendary figure. Wang Lixin naturally wanted to befriend him, and this was the perfect chance to express his thanks and strengthen their bond. Smiling at Chen Yufeng, he said,

“My young friend, curing my daughter makes you a benefactor in my eyes. Let me treat you to a meal—surely you won’t refuse?”

“Of course, I’d be happy to,” Chen Yufeng replied with a smile, accepting Wang Lixin’s invitation. It was a good opportunity to expand his network, after all.

“Huihui, Teling, you both come along as well,” Wang Lixin said, glancing at Wang Hui and Liu Teling. He knew there was some misunderstanding between Liu Teling and Chen Yufeng, so he intended for them to have a chance to reconcile over dinner.

After all, men of such talent were worth befriending—who knew, perhaps he could help the police crack a major case someday.

“Of course I’m coming. I have to thank this young man properly,” Wang Hui said cheerfully with a smile. Chen Yufeng was now her benefactor, so sharing a few drinks to express her gratitude was only right.

“Oh, fine then. As the belle of the force, I’ll give you this honor,” Liu Teling said, casting a sidelong glance at Chen Yufeng, her answer sounding reluctant. But truth be told, he had saved her life, too; a meal and a drink were the least she could do.

As for He Meixuan, she naturally tagged along as well.

Soon, Wang Lixin led the four of them out of the station and drove to a nearby Hunan restaurant.

As they entered, Wang Lixin turned to Chen Yufeng with an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, my friend, for not treating you to a grander meal. Let’s just have a simple dinner tonight.”

“How about this: next time, I’ll invite you to my home. I’ll have Huihui’s mother cook up a real feast to thank you properly.”

“All right, all right. Then, could you leave me your number? It’ll be easier to keep in touch,” Wang Lixin said.

“Of course,” Chen Yufeng agreed readily, and the two exchanged numbers on the spot. Now, he thought, he finally had some connections in official circles.

While chatting, the five of them entered a private dining room, ordered a few dishes and some beer. Wang Lixin usually didn’t drink, but tonight he made an exception, both because he was happy and to show his gratitude to Chen Yufeng.

As they chatted, the table soon filled with food.

After a few bites, Wang Lixin lifted a full glass of beer, smiling warmly as he toasted Chen Yufeng.

“My young friend, let me drink this to you first. Thank you for curing my precious daughter. It had been a constant worry for me.”

“Think nothing of it,” Chen Yufeng said with a hearty laugh, clinking his glass against Wang Lixin’s. Like true men, they both downed their drinks in one go.
