Chapter 45: Turmoil at the Police Station
For a man of his rank to be so blatantly disregarded was an affront, and Zhang Zhenkun naturally seethed with anger. Yet, seeing the other’s calm composure and utter indifference, a new suspicion began to stir within him. Perhaps this man possessed an exceptionally powerful backer? Otherwise, how could he dare to disregard his authority so brazenly? Any ordinary hoodlum or scoundrel would have fallen in line at once, never daring such insolence.
Moreover, just now, with a mere flick of his finger, this man had effortlessly shaken off Zhang Zhenkun’s grip—no feat for a common person. Remembering, too, how even Liu Te Liu had suffered in his hands, Zhang Zhenkun found himself unable to discern his opponent’s background and so refrained from further rash action.
After a few moments’ pause, Zhang Zhenkun decided not to press the matter. He immediately led Zhao Zijun out of the interrogation room and hurriedly asked, “Zijun, are you certain you’ve investigated this guy’s background thoroughly?”
“I’m sure of it,” Zhao Zijun replied promptly, nodding. “You can rest assured, Captain Zhang. I’ve looked into everything. He’s nothing but a street-corner charlatan with no connections to speak of—just a little fancy footwork and some minor medical skills.”
“Oh? In that case, I’ll leave this matter in your hands.”
“No problem. Leave it to me. I’ll see that he gets what’s coming to him—he’ll be begging for mercy before long.”
“Good. I feel confident entrusting this to you!” Zhang Zhenkun felt a weight lift from his heart at Wu Weiming’s confirmation. His only concern had been that the man’s composure might stem from powerful connections. Since he was just a nobody with no backing, he could be dealt with as they pleased. And if, by some unlikely chance, he did provoke the wrong person, Zhao Zijun would be the one to take the fall.
“Get out here, you damned vixen—!”
Just then, as the two conversed, a commotion erupted in the office. Hearing the familiar voice, both Zhang Zhenkun and Zhao Zijun sensed trouble. Chen Yufeng, still handcuffed in the interrogation room, was momentarily forgotten—he couldn’t escape anyway. They rushed to the scene.
Earlier, when Liu Teling had returned to the office, a young woman had barged in and immediately started a heated argument with her.
The young woman jabbed a finger at Liu Teling and screamed, “Liu Teling, you shameless hussy! Seducing my husband, leaving me alone every night—give him back, you wretch!”
Though not quite as striking as Liu Teling, the woman was tall and fair-skinned, with a pretty face—attractive in her own right.
Yet all the officers in the station wore odd expressions as they watched her.
Liu Teling, already in a foul mood, grew angrier still at this display. She snapped, “Wang Hui, what’s your problem now?”
“You think I wouldn’t come? If I hadn’t, my outstanding husband would be yours for good! You wicked seductress, you home-wrecker, you tramp!” Wang Hui ranted as she edged closer to Liu Teling.
Normally, Liu Teling would have ignored her, but after the past days of frustration, her patience had worn thin. This woman’s provocation was the final straw. She rounded on Wang Hui, shouting, “Get out! Don’t let me see you again, you lunatic!”
At Liu Teling’s outburst, Wang Hui’s face twisted in fury. Her expression was almost terrifying as she shrieked, nearly hysterical, “You vixen! What did you say? Who are you calling a lunatic? I’m not crazy—you are! You stole my husband, you fox, and I want you dead!”
Overcome with emotion, Wang Hui charged at Liu Teling, and the two began to grapple. Wang Hui herself had once been an excellent officer, so she was no pushover, but compared to Liu Teling she was still outmatched. After a few rounds, Wang Hui was thrown to the ground.
Lying there, she howled and hurled files at Liu Teling, cursing, “You wretched vixen! You stole my husband and now you bully me! I’ll fight you to the end!”
“Crazy woman! Tell me clearly, who stole your husband?”
“You did! Don’t try to deny it! If you hadn’t seduced him, why would Zhenkun ignore me?”
Liu Teling shot her a glare, replying with exasperation, “Zhang Zhenkun never married you—how could he be your husband? It’s all in your head. Besides, I don’t even like him, much less ‘steal’ him. Get out of my way, you madwoman, you’re interfering with my work.”
“You’re lying, you vixen! Zhenkun loves me—he only betrayed me because you seduced him!”
The more Wang Hui spoke, the more agitated she became, scrambling up for another round. Yet she was still no match for Liu Teling.
Liu Teling, weary of the scene, sighed and turned to leave. But after only a few steps, she suddenly felt a lightness at her waist. Before she could react, the service pistol that had hung at her side was now in Wang Hui’s hands.
The black muzzle was leveled straight at Liu Teling’s head.
“Quick! Call Chief Wang—call Captain Zhang!”
“Wang Hui, put the gun down—don’t do anything rash!”
As the situation escalated, the officers in the station grew tense. Yet, in contrast to their panic, Liu Teling remained remarkably composed. She immediately ordered everyone to lower their weapons, knowing that pointing guns at Wang Hui would only provoke her further.
It was no exaggeration to call Wang Hui a madwoman—everyone at the station knew it. Half a year ago, she’d suffered a head injury in the line of duty, leaving her unbalanced ever since. Her hatred for Liu Teling never dissipated.
She blamed Liu Teling’s arrival for the breakdown of her relationship with Zhang Zhenkun. What she didn’t know was that Zhang Zhenkun’s attention to her had always been calculated. Though he had connections above, Wang Hui’s father was the chief—present advantage trumps distant power. Getting close to Wang Hui would do wonders for his career, and she was pretty enough for a fling.
But once Liu Teling transferred to the East City Precinct, Zhang Zhenkun changed his target. Liu Teling was not only more beautiful but came with a stronger background. He abandoned Wang Hui and pursued Liu Teling instead, though she rejected his advances—only fueling his desire to conquer her.
Zhang Zhenkun was certain Liu Teling was just playing hard to get and would eventually fall for him.
After losing her mind, Wang Hui frequently came to the station to cause trouble for Liu Teling. As the daughter of Chief Wang and a victim of duty-related injury, no one dared lay a finger on her. Her status made it unthinkable for anyone to really use a gun against her.
Brandishing weapons only served to aggravate her, so Liu Teling’s command to lower arms was the wisest move. Besides, as a madwoman, even if she crossed the line, she would never be held criminally responsible.
