Chapter 41: Infernal Affairs
"Damn it, Best Actor indeed. I’m the real victim here, I’m the one who was kidnapped, all right!"
Chen Yufeng watched as Jiang Tailong and his crew put on a heartfelt performance, their act so convincing that he nearly lost his temper and wanted to beat them again. But seeing those bald heads battered into swollen pig faces, while he himself was untouched, he realized that anyone who saw this would probably think the bald guys were the actual victims.
"Heh, you claim you’re the victim?"
Liu Tielin fixed her gaze on Chen Yufeng and sneered. "Then explain this: you say you were kidnapped, but these men are all beaten black and blue, yet you’re standing here without a scratch. How do you explain that?"
"Does your police department require no intelligence to recruit officers? Is it enough to just have a chest? Is this how you judge cases? How could I, one man, have kidnapped five or six people?" Chen Yufeng was thoroughly exasperated.
"Oh, so if I say you hijacked the car, then you did. Not satisfied? If you’re so tough, why don’t you try to hit me? Resist, go on! Aren’t you supposed to be good at fighting?"
"You…"
Chen Yufeng shot her an annoyed glance and understood. This busty officer was clearly holding a grudge from their last encounter and was intent on framing him. Nothing he said would change her mind; she was determined not to let him off.
As for Zhao Zijun standing by her side, he was just as aggravating. He knew exactly what kind of people those bald thugs were, yet acted as if he saw nothing. What was his game?
After a brief pause, Chen Yufeng turned to Zhao Zijun and said,
"Handsome Officer, you’ve got to vouch for me here. You haven’t forgotten what happened the other day, have you? Do I need to tell you again what kind of people these are?"
"Of course I haven’t forgotten."
At the mention of that day, Zhao Zijun’s face darkened and he snapped, "Stop putting on an act with me. You think I don’t know you’re all in this together? Last time you were involved in the kidnapping of the He family’s daughter, now I suppose your gang is fighting over the spoils, which led to this infighting, right?"
"Damn it, you’re just smearing me! That’s not what happened at all."
Chen Yufeng felt like he’d fallen into a trap today. What kind of people were these, for heaven’s sake?
Fine, if you want to play games, I’ll play along. Let’s see who comes out on top.
Jiang Tailong and his men grew anxious when they heard Zhao Zijun’s words. They had hoped their swollen faces might hide their identities, but now it seemed things were going south.
None of them had expected this guy to actually be a cop.
Zhao Zijun quickly began explaining the incident from the other day to Liu Tielin, who grew increasingly delighted as she listened.
So, this petty hoodlum is a professional criminal, a repeat offender who’s dabbled in kidnapping, solicitation, and robbery. With these charges, he’ll rot in prison.
"Take them all away," Liu Tielin ordered curtly, not in the mood for further discussion, giving instructions to the officers nearby.
Jiang Tailong and his crew could only accept their misfortune, obediently clasping their hands behind their heads as the officers led them to the car.
Chen Yufeng, of course, was unconcerned about them. For now, he chose not to resist, instead cooperating fully, stretching out his hands for the cuffs with an amused grin, as if to say: Do as you please.
"Oh? Not running this time? Why so docile today, just giving up? Don’t say I didn’t warn you—given the number of charges against you, you’ll be lucky if you don’t die in prison. Want to resist? Maybe you’d get away," Liu Tielin taunted, clearly hoping to provoke him into fighting back, so she’d have an excuse to shoot him on the spot.
She appeared relaxed, but her nerves were taut, ready to act at any sign of resistance and rid society of a menace.
Chen Yufeng simply wanted to toy with her a little longer. He wasn’t worried; even if he ended up in prison, he could always slip away with an invisibility trick.
Still, being arrested without flair was a bit beneath him; if he was going to be taken in, he’d at least go with style. That was his way.
So, facing Liu Tielin’s provocation, he simply smiled and said,
"Miss Busty, last time I escaped from you. If I get away again today, wouldn’t you lose face? What if you get so angry you bash your head against a wall? I’d hate to see you hurt yourself, so I’ll just go to the station and have some tea with you."
"You… Take him away!"
Liu Tielin glared at him, feeling that merely listening to him was an insult to her ears. This man was pure scum, practically begging for a beating. She resolved to give him a proper ‘welcome’ back at the station.
She snapped the cuffs onto Chen Yufeng herself and ordered her officers to put him in the car. Her hand never left her gun, ensuring she was always ready—such was the impression his skills had made on her last time.
She was taking no chances.
Just as Chen Yufeng was about to be pushed into the police car, a red Ferrari rolled up.
A tall, striking young woman stepped out.
Zhao Zijun started in surprise when he saw He Meixuan.
"Meixuan? Why are you here?"
"I was the one who called the police just now," He Meixuan replied.
"Oh, I see." Zhao Zijun looked at her and said, "Well, since you’re here, it’s perfect. Didn’t you say before that this guy was in cahoots with those bald thugs? Now I’ve got them all—time to bring them in for questioning and find out who was after you."
"That’s not it. Last time was a misunderstanding. This gentleman just saved my mother."
"He saved Aunt Lu? What happened?"
"There’s no time to explain now. I’ll tell you later," He Meixuan said.
She also knew Liu Tielin, and seeing them arrest the wrong person, quickly explained, "Captain, I saw everything clearly—those bald guys kidnapped my friend."
"Listen, they’re nothing but thugs and crooks. Just a few days ago they kidnapped me too, and if it weren’t for my friend’s help, I wouldn’t have escaped. Zijun, you know about this, you can confirm it for her."
"So why are you arresting my friend now? You’ve got it all wrong!"
By now, Chen Yufeng had removed his sunglasses, hat, and fake beard, and He Meixuan immediately recognized him as the ancient-costumed man from the other day.
However, she now realized that calling the police might have been unnecessary.
The supposed victim was unharmed, and the bald thugs once again ended up beaten black and blue.
Liu Tielin was surprised to hear that He Meixuan knew this suspect.
"Meixuan, how could you be friends with someone like him?"
"What about him? I’m telling you, you’ve made a mistake."
Liu Tielin knew that while this time the bald thugs had failed in their kidnapping attempt and been beaten, the incident at the parlor a few days ago was undeniable—he’d resisted arrest violently and harassed her.
He might even have a criminal record and could very well be a fugitive wanted for murder. There was no way she could let him go easily. After a moment, she said,
"Even if he’s innocent this time, I personally witnessed him at the parlor the other day, soliciting and violently resisting arrest, assaulting an officer. Besides, I suspect he’s a fugitive wanted for murder. We’re stepping up efforts to apprehend suspects like him, so he must be taken in."
