Chapter 44: Don’t Force Me to Reveal My Trump Card
"Then give me back my gun first," Liu Teling probed.
"Sure, take it," Chen Yufeng replied without hesitation, handing the gun over to her. The ease with which he did so left Liu Teling momentarily stunned—could he really be so unconcerned? Was this rascal carrying a bomb on him, ready to take them all down with him if things went south?
As she accepted the gun, a surge of temptation to shoot him on the spot rose within her. But then a sense of foreboding crept in—gun or not, she doubted she was truly a match for him. Otherwise, why would he remain so composed, so utterly unfazed? It defied all logic.
Liu Teling had encountered her share of hardened thugs with nerves of steel, but never someone quite like this—his composure was almost inhuman, his skills terrifyingly formidable. Besides, there was something unexplainably strange about him. Twice now, her gun had jammed when she tried to fire at him. Could that really be a coincidence?
No, not even she could believe such a thing was mere chance. Yet she couldn’t find any rational explanation to link it to him. The gun was her own, always within reach, never out of her sight, and she’d not let it slip from her grasp before either attempt—there was simply no opportunity for anyone to tamper with it.
And both times, he had remained astonishingly calm, as if he knew the bullet would never fire. The more she dwelled on it, the greater the shadow he cast upon her heart. Was he gifted with some supernatural ability? What if the gun jammed again—what would he do to her then?
After weighing her options for a moment, Liu Teling ultimately lacked the courage to try firing again. She straightened her clothes and prepared to leave.
But at that moment, Chen Yufeng called after her, his expression turning serious as he warned, "Big Sister Busty, you’re actually quite pretty, and I’d hate to see such a delicate flower wither before its time. So, let me remind you one more time out of goodwill—don’t try any tricks. I’m only cooperating with your investigation because I’m in a good mood. If you piss me off, don’t blame me for turning your whole precinct upside down. Don’t doubt my abilities."
"Are you threatening me?"
"This isn’t a threat—it’s for the sake of your entire precinct."
"You… You’re awfully arrogant," Liu Teling retorted, feeling the brazen threat in his words, yet she dared not challenge him then and there. The man was just too strange. She decided to return to her office and cool off before making any decisions.
In truth, Chen Yufeng was only trying to scare her. He wouldn’t dare cause real havoc at the police station—it was no trivial matter.
Letting Liu Teling go wasn’t about trusting her, but hoping things could be resolved more simply. If not, he could always resort to more drastic measures. Right now, if Chen Yufeng wanted to leave, no one could stop him.
As Liu Teling exited the interrogation room, Zhao Zijun happened to spot her. Something seemed to occur to him and he hurried toward the office. By the time he arrived at the interrogation room, a tall, handsome young officer in his late twenties appeared at his side.
The junior officers greeted this imposing young man respectfully as Captain Zhang.
At that moment, Chen Yufeng was sitting in a chair, legs crossed, sipping tea and humming a tune, looking utterly at ease, as though he’d come to the station for nothing more than a cup of tea and would leave just as easily.
Seeing Zhao Zijun approaching with his men, Chen Yufeng paid him little mind, asking casually, "Can I go now?"
"Go? Heh." A malicious smirk played at Zhao Zijun’s lips as he stared at Chen Yufeng. "So naïve. Once you’re in here, you think you can walk out so soon?"
"What’s that supposed to mean?" Chen Yufeng sensed he was being set up.
"What do I mean? Don’t you know what you’ve done?"
"I’m innocent. I hope you’ll clear my name."
"Drop the act. Confess and you’ll get leniency. Keep playing tough, and you’ll rot in prison," Zhao Zijun said sternly.
"Hey, come on, can’t you find some new lines? Besides, don’t forget who pulled you out from under that beating last time—you looked like a dead dog. Forgotten already?" Chen Yufeng grew increasingly irritated with Zhao Zijun’s ingratitude.
"Still mouthing off? I bet you’re all in it together," Zhao Zijun shot back, his face flushing as his embarrassing past was brought up. He quickly turned to Zhang Zhenkun. "Captain Zhang, this is the punk who harassed Deputy Liu the other day. I heard he took full advantage of her, and you can see for yourself how cocky he is—he doesn’t respect the police at all."
"This guy?" Zhang Zhenkun asked.
"Yes, that’s him."
At this, Captain Zhang Zhenkun’s anger boiled over. He’d already heard about a local ruffian harassing Liu Teling, and as her ardent admirer, his resentment toward this hoodlum was only natural.
Now the culprit stood before him. Both professionally and personally, he couldn’t let this slide. Zhang Zhenkun suppressed his fury and strode over to Chen Yufeng, towering over him with all the authority his rank afforded, his face darkening as he asked coldly, "What exactly did you do to Liu Teling the other day?"
Faced with such posturing, Chen Yufeng felt nothing but disdain. Here was yet another man relying on his official status to act all high and mighty, lording it over ordinary people as if he were a god. Chen Yufeng despised men like this. He could already guess—this one was probably another suitor of the tempestuous police beauty.
He glanced at Zhang Zhenkun and replied with a smile, "Oh, nothing much. We just fell for each other at first sight and couldn’t help ourselves. We rolled around on the floor for a bit—such a wonderful feeling, really. Her lips are soft and fragrant too—unforgettable, truly. What, are you jealous?"
"You’re courting death," Zhang Zhenkun burst out, unable to contain himself at such brazen provocation.
In recent years, thanks to his exceptional abilities and family background, Zhang Zhenkun had risen swiftly through the ranks, becoming captain in just a few short years. Tall, handsome, and successful, he epitomized the golden boy. His only regret was failing to win the heart of Liu Teling, the police belle. His infatuation was no secret at the station, yet despite his long pursuit, he’d never even held her hand.
But this scoundrel, even if he was exaggerating, had clearly taken liberties—otherwise, why would Liu Teling have been so furious the other day?
"Touching the woman I’ve set my sights on—isn’t that courting death?"
With that thought, Zhang Zhenkun’s anger surged. He swung his arm, aiming a heavy slap at Chen Yufeng’s face—but before it landed, Chen Yufeng deftly flicked his finger, effortlessly deflecting the blow. "Officer, are you planning to abuse your power?" he asked, visibly annoyed.
"Hmph, dealing with a thug like you requires a firm hand."
Zhao Zijun, seeing his captain’s anger, was delighted. He drew his gun and aimed it at Chen Yufeng’s head. "Don’t move, punk! You’ve got guts—disrespecting even our captain. You’re out of line!"
"Why should I care?" Chen Yufeng replied with utter indifference. He’d always believed in returning respect with respect, but since these two officers insisted on playing rough, he had no intention of backing down, regardless of their rank.
