Chapter 27: A One-Night Stand
Though she said so, Yu Wanqing couldn’t hide the smile on her face.
“That reversal just now was so satisfying!”
“Your sister isn’t simple. You should be on your guard,” Ye Yao gently warned.
“I know. I saw through her a long time ago.” Yu Wanqing rubbed her ankle.
Yu Wanqing’s family situation was rather unusual. Yu Qingqing was the child her father had with another woman before, and it had been a calculated affair. Out of compassion, since the child was innocent and to keep the family bloodline from being scattered, they had brought her back into the family.
Yu Wanqing, on the other hand, was the legitimate daughter, born of her father’s beloved and lawfully wedded wife—a direct descendant, naturally favored. In truth, the family had treated both girls equally at first, but when they discovered that Yu Qingqing harbored ill intentions even at a young age, and refused to change despite repeated admonitions, they gave up on her.
That was how the talk of Yu Wanqing being favored began.
They did everything with a clear conscience.
Yu Wanqing had once spoken up for Yu Qingqing, but the latter didn’t know how to appreciate it.
“Miss, Master asked you not to sit around—please go greet the guests,” a servant came to remind her.
That dramatic turn of events just now had brought honor to the entire Yu family! Now was the perfect opportunity to build business connections.
Yu Wanqing understood all this. With a helpless sigh, she got up and went out.
Ye Yao smiled, holding her wine glass and sipping leisurely.
She was in a fine mood tonight; one glass after another went down, painting her cheeks with a rosy flush.
With Yu Wanqing around, Ye Yao felt perfectly safe.
Just as she was about to take another sip, a hand snatched the glass away.
“No more for you,” Shen Yan said, sitting down beside her.
Noticing the bandage on his head, Ye Yao couldn’t help teasing, “So you really got into a car accident?”
Shen Yan’s hand froze.
She knew?!
“Tsk, serves you right. Bad people always get their due,” Ye Yao said bluntly.
Shen Yan’s face darkened—he’d actually hoped this woman would say something nice?
“What are you doing here?” Ye Yao frowned.
Given Yu Wanqing’s relationship with her, it was impossible she’d invited Shen Yan.
“I came to return your ring.” Shen Yan took out a ring.
Ye Yao rubbed her eyes, swayed, and tried to take the ring, but failed.
Shen Yan caught her hand and slipped the ring onto her finger.
“It looks good.”
“You’re drunk. I’ll help you upstairs to rest,” Shen Yan offered, helping Ye Yao to her feet.
Her steps were unsteady, stumbling with each pace, so Shen Yan had no choice but to scoop her up in his arms.
Everyone’s attention was on Yu Wanqing, so no one noticed them—except Yu Qingqing.
She already bore a grudge against Ye Yao for what had happened earlier.
In the lounge, Ye Yao was soon asleep.
Shen Yan laid her on the bed, his gaze lingering on her sleeping face, reluctant to look away.
He didn’t understand why his feelings had changed like this.
Ye Yao was adorable when drunk; awake, she was like a hedgehog, pricking him painfully.
After settling her in, Shen Yan turned to leave, when he heard her mumble, “Shen Yan… you bastard!”
Hearing her call his name, a light shone in Shen Yan’s eyes.
If she was calling his name even in her dreams, she must care about him!
“I’m here,” Shen Yan replied.
But Ye Yao only moved her lips without making a sound.
Shen Yan stared, entranced by her mouth, and finally, unable to control himself, pressed a kiss on her lips—a spark igniting in the quiet room.
…
When Ye Yao woke, her whole body ached, and her head felt as if it would explode.
Who was she? Where was she? What had she done?
Turning her head, she saw Shen Yan beside her, and instantly sobered up!
It all came back—she’d been at Yu Wanqing’s birthday party.
How had it come to this…?
Shen Yan opened his eyes. Their gazes met; Ye Yao’s eyes flared with anger as she rolled out of bed.
“Shen Yan, you took advantage of me!”
“You were the one calling my name last night, not letting me leave,” Shen Yan said with a faint smile. “You can’t just pull up your pants and pretend nothing happened.”
“I called your name?”
Ye Yao didn’t believe him for a second. “You’re just trying to shift the blame. Why would I ever call your name?”
She rummaged through the room, found a box of contraceptives in the first-aid kit, and realized what she was about to do.
Shen Yan moved to stop her. “What are you doing?”
“Can’t you see?”
“Yao…”
Shen Yan’s grip tightened. “Let’s have another child.”
The last one had been a regret.
He wanted to make up for it.
“Do you think that’s possible?” Ye Yao’s eyes were full of mockery as she shook off his hand. “I’ll never have a child with you.”
Right in front of him, she swallowed the pill.
Disappointment.
She was truly disappointed.
She’d thought Shen Yan was stopping her because he’d taken precautions last night. She never expected it was because he wanted a child.
After taking the pill, Ye Yao dressed and went to find Yu Wanqing, only to learn she was still sleeping off last night’s drinks.
Ye Yao could only sigh.
She sat by Yu Wanqing’s bed, staring at her.
Yu Wanqing woke with a start, clutching her chest. “You scared me to death! Why are you staring at me like that?”
“I trust you too much,” Ye Yao replied, recounting what had happened the previous night.
Yu Wanqing, fiery as ever, immediately went to grab a knife, ready to chop up Shen Yan.
How dare he bully her friend at her own party?
Ye Yao pulled her back. “Forget it, it’s not worth it. Just remember to protect me next time.”
“Are you sure you’re okay? He took advantage of you!”
If it had been someone else, it would’ve been a big deal; but if it was Shen Yan, Ye Yao didn’t really mind.
“It’s fine.”
“Yao, I’m sorry.”
“Just make sure you keep this to yourself. Don’t go telling everyone,” Ye Yao warned.
Shen Yan would love nothing more than for everyone to know about their relationship—she couldn’t let him have his way.
That was why she didn’t make a scene.
…
Ye Yao felt much more comfortable after moving to her new place. Her life was simple: work and home, with outings with Yu Wanqing whenever she found time.
After making a splash at the birthday party, Yu Wanqing began to expand her career.
Though they joked and played together, both were highly competent professionally.
One day, Ye Yao was driving to work as usual when she sensed something was off.
Checking her rearview mirror, she saw Qin Miao tailing her.
Qin Miao’s eyes were fierce, glaring at her with gritted teeth, as if intent on killing her.
Ye Yao knew what Shen Yan had done about Qin Miao, though she didn’t understand his motive. More importantly, it had nothing to do with her.
But some people just couldn’t see reason.
To shake off her pursuer, Ye Yao stomped on the gas.
But Qin Miao, with murder in her heart, refused to give up.
During her time studying abroad, Ye Yao had relieved stress by racing cars.
She had a knack for it, and gained considerable skill.
Dealing with Qin Miao was more than manageable.
Ye Yao handled several sharp turns with ease.
Qin Miao’s skills weren’t up to par; she crashed straight into the guardrail.
Bang!
Hearing the impact, Ye Yao took out her phone to call an ambulance, but Qin Miao’s car started moving again.
To withstand such a collision and still drive on—her willpower was astonishing.
Ye Yao quickly sped away.
