Chapter 91: The Red Shield Branch Is Established!
Su Ye and Sharon Carter remained at the Osborne Group until nightfall.
A company worth two hundred billion dollars was no easy thing to manage; there were far too many matters to consider, far too many things to learn.
And for Su Ye, a high school graduate who had never before touched on any of this, there was even more to take in. It was not something he could master in a day or two.
By the end of the day, he had only managed to grasp a rough understanding of the Osborne Group’s business ventures, along with some information about suppliers, buyers, and the like.
As for management, he had learned only one phrase: leave professional matters to professionals.
Running a great company meant, first and foremost, managing people. If the right people were chosen, the company’s operations would not suffer major problems.
But on the matter of managing people, Su Ye still had a long road ahead, for the human heart was the hardest thing to fathom.
In the middle of the night, a Chevrolet cruised along the dark streets of Manhattan. Sharon Carter was driving, while Su Ye sat in the passenger seat beside her, rubbing his brow.
So running a company really was not as fun as fighting.
Fighting enemies brought the thrill of conquest; fighting women could bring the same thrill of conquest. But learning to manage a company only brought the irritation of being conquered by endless, tedious affairs.
“Boss, where to? Home, or Muse Bar?” Sharon Carter asked.
A bar had liquor; home had her. Either place would offer relaxation. But as a secretary, she could only be chosen, never make the choice for her boss, so it all depended on Su Ye.
“Go ba—” Su Ye had only just begun when Sharon Carter’s phone suddenly rang. After she answered it, Phil Coulson’s urgent voice came through at once.
“Agent Thirteen, where are you? Return to your unit immediately. Emergency assignment!”
Being Su Ye’s secretary had been Sharon Carter’s own private decision. Neither Nick Fury nor Phil Coulson knew about it, and they had only assumed she was on leave. Unless something serious came up, they usually would not look for her.
Now that the call had come in, and in such an anxious tone, it was obvious that something big had happened.
“Sir, I’m currently outside the Osborne Group in Manhattan,” Sharon Carter said quietly, reporting her location.
She was rather relieved. If this call had come half an hour later, she might already have been busy, perhaps even too busy to answer.
“Manhattan? Good. There’s been an emergency in Harlem. Someone is attacking people in the streets. General Ross and military personnel are already there, but the military has suffered heavy casualties, and many civilians have been caught in it as well. Get to the scene immediately and check out the situation!”
“Remember, your task is only to investigate. Do not act rashly. Wait until we arrive!”
After speaking rapidly, Phil Coulson hung up.
If a clown robbed a bank, S.H.I.E.L.D. could ignore it. But when someone was beating soldiers to death bare-handed in the middle of the street, they truly could not stay out of it.
Sharon Carter turned to look at Su Ye. Phil Coulson was her superior, but now Su Ye was also her superior. Since she had volunteered to serve as his secretary, she could not completely ignore her boss’s presence.
“Go have a look. I’ll go too. There’s nothing to do if we go back anyway.”
“Yes, boss!”
The car executed a beautiful drift and swung around, heading straight for Harlem. Clearly, Sharon Carter’s driving skills were excellent.
As for whether she was equally skilled at entering tunnels and bays, there would be time later to exchange driving techniques properly, Su Ye thought to himself.
Harlem lay in the northern part of Manhattan, only a few kilometers from their location. Under Sharon Carter’s wild speed, it took less than five minutes to get there.
From far away, the two of them could already see blazing fire at the end of the road. Vehicles lay overturned along the roadside, including no small number of military jeeps.
Farther ahead, explosions rang out again and again. Cars, whether blasted skyward or hurled by some unseen force, soared dozens of meters into the air before crashing down in the distance and smashing buildings or vehicles into piles of scrap metal.
The road could no longer carry them any farther. The two had no choice but to get out and watch the explosions from afar.
Sharon Carter immediately took out her communications device and opened a live video call with Phil Coulson. “Sir, the situation here is very bad!”
She still did not know exactly what had happened, but she felt that even if Coulson brought people here, unless someone died, there was no way they could push in close enough to find out what was going on.
Su Ye, however, had already formed a few guesses about the situation.
The exploding streets of Harlem. The armed helicopters circling overhead. And, thanks to his superhuman vision, that giant green brute rampaging wildly in the distance.
The answer was practically obvious.
“I understand. Find a place to observe from a distance for now. We’ll get there as quickly as possible!”
Phil Coulson’s voice in the communicator remained urgent, but Su Ye felt there was no need for them to rush over. As long as the man from the plane did not jump down, even ten times as many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would only be walking to their deaths.
Of course, that was the original course of events. But now that Su Ye had arrived here, now that he had already exposed his identity as a fighter before S.H.I.E.L.D., now that he had proposed to Nick Fury that a branch be established within S.H.I.E.L.D.,
he ought to show at least something to be worthy of that identity, and of that proposal.
“Tell them not to be in such a hurry. For now, this place is under the jurisdiction of our Red Shield branch.”
With that, Su Ye removed his outer coat and walked forward. At some point, a mask had appeared in his hand.
“Red Shield branch?” Sharon Carter stared blankly at him. “When was it founded?”
Su Ye turned back and smiled at her. “Just now. Right here. The Red Shield branch hereby declares its establishment. I am its first branch chief. Care to join us, comrade?”
Sharon Carter wore a troubled expression. She had only just begun acting, and the other side had already unilaterally established a branch. What now? Should she continue to follow through?
“What Red Shield branch? I’ve never heard of it,” Coulson muttered in the communicator.
Su Ye had no intention of forcing Sharon Carter to make a choice. He only smiled and shrugged. “You can think about it. No rush.”
Then he turned and strode toward the blazing fire ahead, while lifting the red mask in his hand and putting it on.
Since it was called the Red Shield branch, wearing a red-faced mask was only fitting.
He had bought it in Chinatown, to conceal his identity as a fighter, and, incidentally, it counted as a little cultural export.
