017. Green Fiend Meteor Hammer
Coming clean to Gwen was something Su Ye had considered long ago. It wasn’t just because the second Spider-Man, Peter Parker, revealed his identity in the films; the main reason was that, with Gwen’s intelligence and keen observation, it would be nearly impossible for Su Ye to keep his secret if they were classmates and lovers. Rather than racking his brains to fabricate lies, it was better to be straightforward about it.
Moreover, based on experience from the MCU, Spider-Man couldn’t fight alone—he needed companions. They didn’t have to be superheroes; even an assistant would do. The three Spider-Men not only had the Avengers as their team, but also Ned as a trusty sidekick, which saved them a lot of trouble—sometimes even lending a hand with their alibis. If Su Ye had Gwen, the exemplary daughter in her parents’ and teachers’ eyes, to cover for him, things would undoubtedly become much easier.
After weighing everything, he decided to tell her the truth. Of course, he would only reveal his Spider-Man identity; if he gained any other secret personas in the future, he certainly wouldn’t share those with Gwen lightly.
After saying goodbye to Gwen, Su Ye swung his way through the city, arriving at the carnival site in Times Square before Captain George did. As a landmark, Times Square was a notorious hotspot for disaster in Marvel movies—both the living and the dead loved to stir up trouble there.
By the time Su Ye arrived, chaos had already erupted. Traces of explosions scarred the buildings, the stands had collapsed, and many of the enormous balloons and decorations lay toppled. Panicked crowds screamed and fled below, while the Green Goblin, clad in his green flight suit and riding his glider, cackled wildly above.
Su Ye didn’t charge in recklessly; the Green Goblin wasn’t just a man in a suit—his body had been enhanced seven or eight times over by experimental drugs. He was immensely strong and, in Spider-Man 3 of the MCU, he had even pinned the young web-slinger to the ground single-handedly. To think one could defeat such an opponent with brute force alone would be naive.
As for Mary Jane, who was shrieking on the nearby stand, Su Ye decided to leave her for now—he’d intervene if the structure actually collapsed.
Norman Osborn was deeply troubled lately. As the founder and chairman of Oscorp, he found himself beset on all sides by the board of directors and the military. His research projects had failed to yield results, funding was cut off, and he was being edged out by the board. Without his knowledge, they’d already resolved to remove him as chairman and sell the company. For someone determined to become the military’s leading arms supplier, this was a blow worse than death.
Thus, already suffering from a split personality, Norman Osborn became the Green Goblin and crashed the carnival organized by his rival, the Quest Aerospace Organization, intending to wipe out every Oscorp executive involved. He succeeded—those who’d tried to cast him out like a stray dog were reduced to ashes by his pumpkin bombs.
But the Green Goblin wasn’t satisfied—not the original Norman, but the violent persona that had split from him. He craved further destruction and carnage. For example, the young woman in a cheongsam, slumped on the shattered stand and screaming like a slaughtered pig. She was calling for "Harry," so she must be his useless son's girlfriend. His idiotic son had managed to find a girlfriend after getting a boyfriend? How extraordinary—he had to take a closer look.
The Green Goblin steered his glider closer to the broken stand, advancing on the shrieking girl. "Hello there, my dear!"
Honestly, if Harry hadn’t fainted in the chaos, he would surely have rushed to fight the Green Goblin. Who the hell was this guy, calling his girlfriend "dear" the moment he appeared? Outrageous!
With Harry unconscious, it was Su Ye who seized the opportunity. He’d been observing for a while, waiting for the Green Goblin to hover mid-air and drop his guard. Then, just like the original Spider-Man, he crept in and sabotaged the glider, turning the Goblin into a wayward kite.
It was the simplest and most direct way to resolve the crisis. As for hand-to-hand combat? Better not—Su Ye doubted he would win against the Goblin in a brawl, and there was no need to suffer unnecessarily.
This, however, served as a reminder for Su Ye: relying solely on Spider-Man’s super strength and reflexes wasn’t enough—not even against the Green Goblin could he guarantee victory. It was essential to keep improving his skills.
The Green Goblin was sizing up Mary Jane, contemplating how to give this obviously gold-digging girl a lesson she’d never forget. Suddenly, sparks crackled from beneath his feet. His glider lost all control, belching black smoke and careening wildly.
"Who did this? Who’s responsible, you bastard?"
The rogue glider shot into the sky, with the Green Goblin struggling to steer, unable to turn as deftly as before, flying further and further away. At that moment, two webs shot out—one stuck to the Goblin’s back, yanking him off the glider, while the other latched onto the glider itself.
Su Ye didn’t swing out after him; he simply tied the two webs into a tight knot and let go. Onlookers watched as the villain who’d destroyed the carnival was dragged skyward by his out-of-control glider, swinging like a pendulum and crashing into buildings.
Bang! The Goblin smashed into the side of a building, sparks flying as he was dragged along the wall.
Crash! His head slammed into the roof of another building, shattering a corner.
Snap! Yet another lightning rod was snapped in two beneath him, and, for a moment, it sounded as if the sky itself was breaking.
As the Green Goblin was dragged out of sight, battered and bruised, even some of the more soft-hearted onlookers began to pity him. No one knew where he’d finally land, but no matter how sturdy his suit, a fall like that was bound to leave him with a concussion or internal bleeding.
Su Ye ignored the Goblin’s flight and turned to Mary Jane, still shrieking. He shot a web into her mouth, grabbed her by the neck, and tossed her beside the unconscious Harry before swinging away.
It was only then that Captain George’s car finally arrived at the scene.
"Attention, everyone—the suspect is an extremely dangerous super-criminal. Remain vigilant and—"
Captain George, holding his radio and wearing a grim expression, was cut off as he opened the car door—the suspect had already been driven away.
