Volume 1, Chapter 3: The First Crisis
Ye Feng shook his head; his relationship with Zhang Xiaoman was essentially over. The scene in the cabin had completely shattered his hopes. If they survived, there would be no future for them. Thinking of this, a deep sense of desolation settled in his heart.
He had worked countless day and night part-time jobs, especially on Zhang Xiaoman’s birthday, doubling his efforts just so he could give her a joyful celebration. The so-called happiness was simply the things Zhang Xiaoman desired—things that were all very expensive, and he had to strive hard for them. Yet in the end, this was the outcome. Just the thought of it chilled him to the bone.
His expression shifted subtly—Lin Yao seemed to notice something—and she said no more. Although they had escaped the shipwreck, they had never experienced life on a deserted island. Whether they would survive or not remained uncertain. For now, their most important task was to find a way to stay alive; everything else was superfluous.
As the sky darkened, he looked up and took a watch from the wrist of a dead elderly man. The man was dressed in a suit, clearly a senior executive from some company. Unfortunately... it was too late.
It was already five in the afternoon, and they needed to urgently find shelter. No one knew what other dangers might lurk on this deserted island. Glancing at the darkening sky again, he said to Lin Yao, "It’s about to pour. We have to find somewhere to take shelter and figure out how to dry our clothes."
Lin Yao nodded, and the two quickly left the beach. Soon, they entered the forest on the island. At the very moment they stepped into the woods, an undefined sense of danger heightened their alertness. Both were adults and understood how perilous an uncharted island could be, especially within the forest.
Ye Feng drew a small knife from his backpack, his gaze sharp as he scanned the surroundings, ready to act at any moment. Lin Yao followed closely behind.
Fortunately, not far ahead, they spotted a small hill. Beneath a protruding rock on the hill was a hollow space just big enough for the two of them to take shelter from the rain. It wouldn’t shield them from the wind, but with nightfall approaching, they dared not venture deeper into the forest.
This spot would be their refuge for the night.
Surrounded by thick tree trunks, the place afforded considerable concealment. The trunks also blocked some of the wind, making it a relatively good spot. However, several fallen tree trunks lay across their path, three thick logs piled nearly three meters high.
The gap between them did not allow passage; they had to climb over. Yet these fallen logs also provided some cover.
Ye Feng signaled to Lin Yao and went over first. After ensuring the area was safe, he beckoned her to follow. But as a woman, Lin Yao's legs trembled with fear. Already scared of heights, having just climbed up, she wasn’t ready to jump down. Dizzy and disoriented, she fell.
In the nick of time, Ye Feng reached out, catching her in a full embrace. His hands landed squarely on her hips. Realizing this, Lin Yao’s face flushed crimson. Though her upper body was covered by Ye Feng’s jacket, her lower half was still clad in a thin swimsuit, revealing her form intimately against the skin.
At that moment, Lin Yao wished she could disappear into the earth. Her heart raced wildly, and her body felt utterly weak—she was overwhelmed by embarrassment.
Seeing her lower her head, cheeks burning bright red, and mindful of where his hands rested, Ye Feng suddenly felt a dry mouth and a rush of heat to his face. His rational mind momentarily faltered, his breath coming fast.
Lin Yao sensed his sudden change and struggled lightly before leaping down from his arms, her face still burning, avoiding his gaze.
Only then did Ye Feng regain his composure, though his heart thudded painfully with reluctance. As a virgin, this intimate contact was a first for him.
“You rest here for a bit. I’ll go gather some branches to start a fire,” he said before quickly slipping away.
This scene left the usually shy Lin Yao momentarily stunned. After a while, she covered her mouth, chuckling softly.
Soon, Ye Feng returned with a bundle of branches. Darkness had fully descended, and with the night came an even greater sense of danger.
They had to get the fire started quickly; otherwise, who knew what threats might be lurking.
Lin Yao tidied up their shelter, making it less messy and the air a bit fresher.
“Will the fire light?” she asked.
Their clothes were still wet, and if they didn’t dry them soon, they might fall ill the next day. Falling sick on the island would be extremely dangerous.
“Of course,” Ye Feng replied with a smile.
He wasn’t trying to make fire by friction; he had found several lighters on the bodies of the dead, all functional.
Just then, Lin Yao let out a startled cry.
Before Ye Feng could react, her delicate frame suddenly wrapped around him from behind.
But he had no time to enjoy the moment.
The danger he feared was upon them.
Gripping his dagger tightly, Ye Feng’s eyes locked onto a glowing green light on the slope beside the hill—a chilling aura of menace.
Under the night sky, Ye Feng clutched the only weapon he had, his heart pounding fiercely.
On the slope, a wild wolf emitting an eerie green glow was slowly approaching.
Lin Yao’s scream had been triggered by this glowing menace.
Neither she nor Ye Feng had expected this. Such a scene was usually confined to television or novels, yet it was now unfolding before their eyes. If they couldn’t fight it off, they might become the wolf’s next meal—how could they not be terrified?
“Ye Feng, wh-what do we do?” Lin Yao’s voice trembled with fear.
Her closeness, pressed against him in panic, stirred a fierce urge in Ye Feng to fight.
“Step back a little. I’ll figure something out!” he said.
Blushing, Lin Yao quickly retreated. But just a few steps back, the wolf licked its lips, its eerie green eyes immediately locking onto her.
This wolf was targeting Lin Yao.
Damn! This had to be a male wolf!
