Chapter 76: Lacking Sense
Jiang Mohe said nothing, grasping Xianyu Jing’s hand as he led her toward the balcony, away from the door. He lowered his voice, “Someone strapped timed explosives to trained rats and released them from the underground tunnel outside the Rose Garden.”
Xianyu Jing’s hazel eyes widened in alarm. No wonder the ground kept shaking—it was explosives! “What about here—”
“Captain Han has already blocked the passage. We’re safe for now,” Jiang Mohe reassured her.
“That’s a relief,” Xianyu Jing breathed out.
“However, I’ve sensed something unusual nearby.” Jiang Mohe’s gaze was somber.
“You mean, someone has sneaked in again, trying to steal the documents from my brother’s study?” Xianyu Jing recalled the last intruder.
Jiang Mohe lowered his eyes in thought. This time, it wasn’t so simple. After the previous incident, Nangong Ao had ordered Han Zhong to tighten security, making it difficult for outsiders to break in again; hence the use of rats with explosives.
If it wasn’t an outsider, then it was an inside job.
But Jiang Mohe didn’t want to add to Xianyu Jing’s unease. He simply said, “Whatever their purpose, my duty is to protect you.”
“With Su Cha here, I should—”
“Shh!” Jiang Mohe interrupted her, urging silence.
At that moment, faint noises sounded outside. Jiang Mohe mouthed silently, “Someone’s here.”
Xianyu Jing immediately tensed.
Soon, the door to the adjacent room opened. Outside, the sounds of fighting erupted.
Yet Jiang Mohe made no move to help, instead slipping into the shadows.
With a bang, their door was kicked open, and a dark figure lunged straight at Xianyu Jing.
She instinctively stepped back. Before the figure could reach her, someone intercepted him mid-stride, kicking him away.
With a crash, the solid wood wardrobe splintered, its frame fractured by the force. The attacker was wedged inside, unable to move.
Xianyu Jing’s eyes widened in shock.
She’d seen her master split wood with bare hands, but never witnessed anyone kick a person into a solid wardrobe.
Was that even humanly possible? Usually, it was the stuff of movie effects!
She’d glimpsed Jiang Mohe’s skill before, but that had been shrouded in smoke and she hadn’t seen clearly.
Now, it happened right before her eyes. Xianyu Jing stared at Jiang Mohe’s long legs—could they be mechanical?
While she was secretly speculating, Jiang Mohe strode to the attacker, dragged him out, his eyes cold as frost. “Who sent you?”
Blood streamed from the attacker’s head. He looked at Jiang Mohe with a bloodshot eye, sneering, “Ha, you freaks will all disappear from this world eventually!”
Jiang Mohe had grown numb to such words. He repeated, “Who sent you? Duan Chao, or Jiang Yan?”
A flicker of confusion crossed the attacker’s gaze. Jiang Mohe scoffed, “You don’t even know their names, yet you dare pose as a member of the True Mystic Sect? Fool!”
“I—I am from the True Mystic Sect—”
Jiang Mohe tore off the attacker’s sleeve, fixing his gaze on the circular totem tattoo on the man’s arm, his tone mocking, “It’s a decent imitation, but still lacking.”
“Lacking in what?” the attacker demanded resentfully.
Jiang Mohe’s lips curled, “Lacking brains!”
“You—”
Only now did the attacker realize that Jiang Mohe had coaxed him into revealing everything in just a few words. Clearly lacking brains!
Even Xianyu Jing felt embarrassed for him. “How did you get in?”
This time, the attacker refused to speak.
Jiang Mohe gripped his jaw, forced his mouth open, and poured a small vial of liquid inside.
“You should be familiar with the taste of this disguise serum,” Jiang Mohe said.
“Mmm—” The attacker struggled, but his face gradually changed.
Xianyu Jing didn’t recognize him, but Jiang Mohe did. “Guard Liu, long time no see!”
“You—” Guard Liu glared at Jiang Mohe, his teeth clenched. “How did you know?”
Jiang Mohe replied lightly, “You always targeted me.”
Ever since Jiang Mohe joined Han Zhong’s security team, Guard Liu had taken a dislike to him, mocking and picking at him at every turn. Other guards had even argued with Guard Liu over it.
Today, Jiang Mohe returned, and while all the other guards greeted him, this old adversary was nowhere to be seen.
“Just because of that?” Guard Liu didn’t believe Jiang Mohe could be so perceptive.
“I know your aura. Whether you disguise yourself or revert, your aura never changes,” Jiang Mohe said. “Because—I am an ‘anomaly’!”
That last sentence was a direct slap in Guard Liu’s face.
“Caught by you—just my bad luck!” Guard Liu was furious. “But you won’t get anything out of me!”
Jiang Mohe struck him, knocking him unconscious. Interrogation wasn’t his job.
He’d wasted words just to find out if this was connected to Duan Chao, Jiang Yan, and the others.
Rumor had it that the True Mystic Sect had sent those two to avenge the loss of their Imperial City stronghold. They were high-level elites from the Sect headquarters, not easy to deal with like the previous lackeys.
Guard Liu was skilled, and at first Jiang Mohe believed him to be a member of the True Mystic Sect. But the moment he called Jiang Mohe an “anomaly,” doubts arose.
His identity was known to few, except those of his kind. Yet Guard Liu possessed none of the unique abilities of an “anomaly”—he was a “pseudo-anomaly.”
A pseudo-anomaly was someone not of anomaly bloodline, but injected with refined anomaly blood, enhancing aggression but lacking true anomaly traits.
It seemed this was a conflict between anomalies.
Jiang Mohe searched Guard Liu, found the security team’s Bluetooth communicator, and called Han Zhong, then dragged Guard Liu out.
Xianyu Jing followed, finding Su Cha collapsed against the wall. She hurried to check—thankfully, Su Cha had only fainted and was otherwise unharmed.
Xianyu Jing helped Su Cha to the room, tending her wound.
When Han Zhong and the other guards arrived, seeing Jiang Mohe’s captive, they were all dumbfounded.
“How could it be him?”
“Brother Liu is the mole?”
“Fortunately Brother Mohe caught him, he deserves a proper punishment…”
The guards murmured among themselves until Han Zhong silenced them sternly, “Enough! Madam and the young master will deal with him. No gossip!”
Everyone fell silent.
Han Zhong patted Jiang Mohe’s shoulder. “Thanks to you, we’re safe. Well done!”
“This matter—” Jiang Mohe began, only to be interrupted by Han Zhong. “The responsibility is mine. I’ll answer to the young master myself.”
Although Han Zhong hadn’t hired Guard Liu, the fact that he worked under him and Han Zhong failed to notice his abnormality was Han Zhong’s oversight.
Jiang Mohe said no more. This wasn’t his place to intervene—it all depended on how Nangong Ao would handle it.
In the early hours, Nangong Ao returned to the manor, accompanied by Bai Luomei and Ah Si.
First, he checked on Madam Nangong and Xianyu Jing, ensuring their safety, then went to the first-floor hall to hear Han Zhong’s report.
The True Mystic Sect’s minor lackeys outside had been dealt with—no major problem there.
What vexed Nangong Ao was that someone had managed to infiltrate the manor again!
“Han Zhong, it seems you’ve grown tired of being security captain!” Nangong Ao rebuked him, icy-faced.
