Chapter 38: Stay Away from Me
"Is something the matter?"
His expression was indifferent, as if he had completely forgotten what had happened tonight.
Xianyu Jing saw no obvious wounds on him. Thinking back to his astonishing speed during the attack at the venue, she asked, "Are you from the Jiang family in the northern part of the city?"
Jiang Mohe did not deny it. "Yes."
"Why are you working as a security guard for the Nangong family?"
"Because the pay here is better."
Xianyu Jing was taken aback by this answer.
The Jiang family’s business stretched across the globe; according to Er Yuan’s reports, even a simple errand would cost millions. How could the security guard salary at the Nangong family possibly be higher?
She was about to ask further when Jiang Mohe abruptly pulled her into the room, pressed a finger to his lips, signaling silence.
Xianyu Jing listened quietly. Footsteps sounded outside the surveillance room.
Jiang Mohe stepped out, casually pulling the door almost shut behind him.
"It’s late. What are you doing here?" His tone was curt.
"I came to check why Captain Jiang hasn’t rested yet," replied Su Cha.
Jiang Mohe retorted bluntly, "You have no authority over me."
"Hmph, don’t think that just because the young master made you captain, you’ve earned his trust and can do as you please. If you dare to do anything shady behind his back, the Nangong family won’t spare you!" Su Cha’s words dripped with warning.
Jiang Mohe’s eyes were icy. "I only follow the young master’s orders and report to him alone. You have no right to question me."
"With the nature of the Jiang family, you’d be loyal to someone else?" Su Cha scoffed. "Only the young master and Miss Xianyu are kind enough to fall for your tricks. One day, they’ll see your true colors!"
"I don’t need to prove myself to anyone. You’d better not provoke me," Jiang Mohe said, directly ordering her out.
Su Cha glared at him for a moment, then turned and left the surveillance room.
Jiang Mohe returned, met Xianyu Jing’s complicated gaze.
He was calm. "I’ve already severed ties with the Jiang family. Now the young master gives me a meal, so I work for him. Don’t believe Su Cha’s words."
While Xianyu Jing pondered his statement, Jiang Mohe grabbed a towel from the rack and casually wiped his hair. "Don’t tell anyone about tonight, including Su Cha."
He meant his presence at the venue and his subduing of those men in black.
Xianyu Jing looked puzzled. "Why?"
"Because she belongs to Madam Nangong."
Xianyu Jing didn’t understand.
Su Cha was placed by Steward Xue to watch over her, so naturally loyal to Madam Nangong, but didn’t she also have to follow the young master’s orders?
"Why hide it from her?"
Jiang Mohe didn’t explain. "Just remember. And don’t come here directly in the future—call me if you need anything."
Xianyu Jing became even more confused.
----------
By midday the next day, Aunt Rong found it odd that Xianyu Jing had not yet risen.
"What time did Miss Xianyu return last night?" she asked Su Cha.
Su Cha said nothing.
"Did the second young master get carried away and ignore curfew?" Aunt Rong grumbled unhappily, "I knew he’d do this. When the young master comes back, I must tell him!"
Speak of the devil—Aunt Rong’s words had barely finished when Cui Hao drove in.
He looked tired, having received a call from the young master early that morning to prepare the car for a pick-up.
Just yesterday, during the video conference, it was said that work wasn’t finished—why had he returned early?
When Cui Hao got up and glanced at the news headlines, he understood why the young master had hurried back. The previous night, the Dihong Tower had been attacked in a serious incident!
Upon receiving the news, Nangong Ao immediately took a private jet back from Country Z.
Before returning to the mansion, he had visited Dihong Tower, where the entire banquet floor was cordoned off.
Afterwards, he went to the police headquarters to learn the details and progress of the case, then returned to the mansion.
As soon as he arrived, he summoned Su Cha to the study for questioning.
Su Cha recounted the events in general, and Nangong Ao reprimanded her for inadequate protection. Su Cha listened silently, head bowed.
Before leaving, she mentioned, "Young master, something else happened a few days ago..."
Xianyu Jing awoke as Nangong Ao’s car entered the mansion.
Descending the stairs, she saw Jiang Mohe heading upstairs to the third floor with a furrowed brow, obviously summoned by Nangong Ao about last night.
Aunt Rong spotted Xianyu Jing and hurried over. "Miss, I heard from Xiao Cui that you were attacked last night. Why didn’t you tell me when you got back?"
Xianyu Jing smiled apologetically, "I didn’t want to worry you since I wasn’t hurt."
Aunt Rong was indignant. "The second young master is always stirring up trouble! Insisting you attend that charity ball, not only giving you a fright, but also getting Xiao Su and Xiao Jiang scolded!"
Xianyu Jing didn’t join in the complaints. No one could have anticipated what happened last night.
However, since the incident took place at Dihong Tower, the young master would certainly pursue accountability.
Sure enough, the sound of something falling echoed upstairs.
The young master rarely lost his temper like this; Aunt Rong was startled, her expression anxious. "He won’t blame Xiao Jiang, will he?"
Outside the study upstairs, Cui Hao grew uneasy at the commotion. Today, the boss’s storm was likely to be fierce!
Glancing at Su Cha beside him, he noticed a hint of schadenfreude on her face.
Inside the study, Jiang Mohe looked down at the scattered folders, silent.
Behind the desk, Nangong Ao’s expression was grim. "Those people truly stop at nothing!"
Even Uncle Chen, loyal to the Nangong family for years, had been corrupted—how could Dihong Tower be safe now?
"You’re certain the Jiang family wasn’t involved?" Nangong Ao’s sharp gaze fixed on Jiang Mohe.
Jiang Mohe responded steadily, "Jiang Qihuan was transferred south two years ago. Jiang Qiwu’s methods are ruthless; if he wants to act, even I can’t stop him."
Jiang Qiwu currently held power in the Jiang family. Unlike his hot-headed brother, he was meticulous and wouldn’t act in public lightly.
Besides, those men last night lacked speed and strength. If they were Jiang family’s errand runners, even he would have struggled to stop them.
Nangong Ao had reviewed the surveillance footage; those men in black clearly weren’t Jiang family caliber, and Jiang Mohe had dispatched them with ease.
Moreover, it further proved Jiang Mohe’s exceptional skills; the cameras hadn’t caught him in action. Even among the Jiang family, few could match him!
Nangong Ao had kept him precisely for those Jiang family traits. Only those who truly understood the family knew how they managed to make their errand business reach worldwide.
"If those people want to provoke me, let’s give them a proper response!"
The chill emanating from Nangong Ao lowered the study’s temperature by several degrees, making the air cold and thin.
