Chapter 93: Next Time, No Need to Consider the Consequences
Soon, the entire car was engulfed in roaring flames.
The truck responsible for the accident sped away from the scene after the collision.
A black SUV drove up the one-way street behind them. Only after confirming that the burning car was completely destroyed and no one inside showed any sign of life did it slowly leave the scene.
Ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars arrived in a flurry of sirens. The crowd of onlookers was kept dozens of meters away from the accident, yet people continued to snap photos and live-stream the horrific tragedy.
As night fell and city lights flickered on, this usually quiet neighborhood became crowded and clamorous because of the disaster.
No one noticed a shadowy figure in a nearby, dimly lit alley, who leapt onto the rooftop of a row of low buildings.
With nimble movements, he hopped between the rooftops, holding an unconscious girl in his arms. The two vanished together at the end of the street’s rooftops…
When Nangong Ao received the call from the police, he was standing at Xianyu Zhen’s bedside.
He was the owner of the car involved in the accident, so the police contacted him for information.
The circumstances of the accident were highly suspicious; several eyewitnesses claimed to have seen the vehicle drive out of the one-way street before the truck rammed into it.
Yet, no bodies were found inside the car.
Nangong Ao told the police that his car had been stolen from the hospital parking lot, and the surveillance cameras there had been destroyed.
The cameras had indeed been sabotaged.
Nangong Ao gazed at the scrapes on Xianyu Zhen’s cheeks and limbs, his face dark and eyes burning with suppressed fury.
Cui Hao, standing at the door, hardly dared to breathe. Just this morning Miss Xiao had fallen ill, and now in the evening, the young lady was in trouble too—how could so much misfortune strike at once?
“Didn’t you say her injuries weren’t serious? Why is she still unconscious?” Nangong Ao asked Dr. Yao, who was standing nearby.
“Miss Xianyu’s injuries are indeed minor, but she has a slight concussion, which is why she hasn’t woken up yet.”
Dr. Yao explained, casting a glance at the silent, shadowy figure in the corner.
That person had suffered far more serious injuries; when he was brought into the emergency room, his forehead and back were covered in blood. Yet after being treated, he insisted on staying here.
Such dedication—this bodyguard was truly committed.
After Dr. Yao finished, Nangong Ao dismissed both her and Cui Hao from the room.
He then turned to Jiang Mohe, “Did you see who was behind it?”
Jiang Mohe replied, “Most likely the same group as last time—the ones with Guard Liu.”
“So they couldn’t wait any longer!”
For centuries, families like theirs—those dubbed ‘the Otherkind’—not only had to fend off the ceaseless harassment of the Purge Organization, but also constantly schemed against one another, sometimes even selling out their kindred just to survive.
Though such people were despised by their own, there were always those eager to pull the families at the top of the pyramid down and take their place.
The Nangong family had always been the most coveted. In the days when Lady Nangong held power, her decisiveness commanded fear and respect among the Otherkind.
But now, with Nangong Ao adhering strictly to the law, he found himself constrained at every turn.
Now, finally, Nangong Ao was thoroughly enraged. “If this happens again, don’t worry about the consequences!”
Jiang Mohe understood exactly what he meant. “Yes, sir!”
———
In the early hours, Jiang Mohe, keeping watch outside the VIP ward, heard Xianyu Zhen muttering in her sleep. He entered the room, reached out, and pressed a point at the back of the dozing nurse’s neck, sending her into a deep sleep.
He then approached the bedside, gazing at Xianyu Zhen as she whispered strange words in her dream, his eyes full of complicated emotion.
He couldn’t understand what she was saying, but the language sounded very much like the oldest tongue of their kind.
Though Xianyu Zhen bore the blood of the Nangong family, she showed none of their distinct traits and seemed almost entirely normal.
Yet she knew the ancient language of the Otherkind—a skill possessed by only a rare few among them.
The longer he spent by her side, the more Jiang Mohe realized that her identity was far from that of a distant relative of the Nangong family.
He knew the Nangong family would never bring back someone of no value, let alone protect her so fiercely.
Clearly, others who understood the Nangong family saw this as well, and had begun to target her.
But Jiang Mohe would protect her with everything he had—not just because it was his duty, but because the moment he first met her, that vow had already taken root in his mind…
“Brother, I’m thirsty...” Xianyu Zhen suddenly opened her drowsy eyes, still foggy with sleep, and mistook Jiang Mohe for her brother.
Jiang Mohe poured a cup of warm water from the dispenser, helped her sit up, and gently brought the cup to her lips, feeding her slowly.
After finishing the whole cup, Xianyu Zhen’s mind gradually cleared. Glancing up and recognizing Jiang Mohe, she was momentarily stunned.
Only after regaining her senses did she recall the accident.
She remembered that when the truck crashed into them, Jiang Mohe had, in a split second, moved from the driver’s seat to shield her, then leapt out through the sunroof with her in his arms.
After that, she’d felt dizzy and lost consciousness.
“We’re still alive?” she asked in disbelief.
“Yes,” Jiang Mohe’s deep voice sounded right beside her, grounding her in reality.
Yet, seeing how little she was hurt, it almost felt like a dream.
“Your injuries…” She stared at the bandages on Jiang Mohe’s forehead, her heart swelling with gratitude and guilt.
Once again, he had saved her.
“It’s nothing,” Jiang Mohe replied casually. He picked up a pillow and placed it behind her for support, then stepped back to stand at a respectful distance.
“Did the police get involved?” Xianyu Zhen guessed.
“Yes,” Jiang Mohe nodded, “But without surveillance footage, there’s nothing to link us.”
Xianyu Zhen knew what Nangong Ao was capable of. With him handling things, they wouldn’t be implicated.
Still, this was her first time experiencing such a deadly attack, and it left her shaken.
“They break the law so brazenly—aren’t they afraid of being brought to justice?”
Perhaps, in her world, such matters were serious. But among the Otherkind, these things were all too common.
This world was never as simple as it appeared to ordinary eyes. Countless beings and events existed beyond their comprehension—some hidden in plain sight, others forever concealed.
So to her question, Jiang Mohe simply replied, “Only the strong have the power to bring them to justice.”
After all, among those people, many hailed from noble families like the Nangongs. They wielded their influence to absolve themselves of any wrongdoing.
