I made a few changes earlier. I searched this morning and wondered why the names of those two flames sounded so familiar—it was my mistake. They have been changed to Wind-Thunder Flame and Iceheart Flame.

Hearing the savage edge in Gu Changqing’s voice, Qiao Renxia was too shocked to speak.

This was a sixth-level Awakened—not some sixth-level wild beast.

Qiao Renxia’s memories were still fixed on the earlier clash between Gu Changqing and the guards, when he had injured quite a number of them.

At the time, Gu Changqing had only been a fourth-level Awakened. Even though the abilities he displayed had been astonishing, it had still been obvious that he possessed no more than the strength of a fourth-level Awakened.

How long had it been since then?

She no longer had any idea what level of strength her captain possessed.

Gao Wenxin turned her head and looked Gu Changqing up and down. “You sound pretty confident.”

“What if I actually beat him to death?” Gu Changqing said with a broad grin.

“The one in front is Zhang Fan, a psychic Awakened. The one behind is Ji Yan, a fire-type Awakened. Which one do you want?” Gao Wenxin asked casually.

Every sixth-level Awakened in Southern Chu was a figure of renown. There were fewer than twenty among the Guard Corps. One could say that each of them ruled over a territory—true lords of their own domains.

Not because of their authority, but because of their personal strength.

Even though Gao Wenxin had never met them before, she could identify their status at a glance.

“The fire-type one, of course!” Gu Changqing said with a grin. “Psychics can fight, but fire-types are easier to deal with!”

Gao Wenxin was even more surprised. Fire- and ice-type Awakened were both among the abilities most capable of countering Gu Changqing.

As he gave his orders, Gu Changqing pushed open the door and stepped out of the car. “Drive the car farther away. Don’t let them damage it!”

“Block the road in front and behind us!” Gao Wenxin ordered.

After getting out, Gu Changqing merely glanced at Zhang Fan ahead of him before turning to look at Ji Yan behind him. The man appeared to be only twenty-six or twenty-seven. He wore sunglasses and a beige mandarin-collar suit.

His medium-length hair stood straight up, making the top of his head resemble a mass of flame.

“I didn’t expect you to actually dare intercept us here,” Gao Wenxin said after getting out of the car. “Looks like you’ve truly decided to tear all pretenses aside.”

Qiao Renxia and Tan Li immediately drove to distant positions ahead and behind them, then sealed off the road.

“Gu Changqing is vicious by nature. He injured numerous people on the Qing River battlefield, and after leaving, he became even more ruthless, killing several Awakened. The Guard Corps has already issued an arrest warrant. Do you still intend to shield him?” Zhang Fan said coldly.

“Oh? Where is your evidence? Don’t make reckless accusations without proof! Even if you have evidence, this is Chongming’s affair. We will handle it internally. Since when has it been the Guard Corps’s place to interfere?”

Gao Wenxin held a short saber in her hand. It was only a foot and a half long and looked almost like a toy.

But no one dared underestimate it—not even Zhang Fan.

“Take him back first. The evidence will naturally be produced afterward. Gao Wenxin, you can’t protect him!”

“Whether I can protect him isn’t for you to decide!” The saber in Gao Wenxin’s hand remained sheathed, yet her entire body was like a drawn blade, her eyes razor-sharp.

“Obstinate fool! Gao Wenxin, you truly are talented, but you overestimate yourself!” Ji Yan spoke, his voice filled with authority.

If the two sixth-level Awakened joined forces, Gao Wenxin could stop one at most. The other would seize Gu Changqing and leave.

“You talk too much!” Gu Changqing made a throat-slitting gesture toward Ji Yan. The Tortoise-Snake Eight Trigrams Lamp appeared above his head, and he did not bother concealing it. The lamp hovered overhead, its red radiance enveloping his entire body.

“So it is true!” The moment they saw the Tortoise-Snake Eight Trigrams Lamp above Gu Changqing’s head, both men’s eyes lit up.

“Gu Changqing, come with us quietly and you may still have a chance!” Ji Yan said in a low voice.

“Are you trying to scare me, you bastard? Let me punch you first, then we’ll talk!” Gu Changqing snarled. He drove off the ground and lunged toward Ji Yan.

At the same time, a gourd appeared in his hand.

“Just like the reports said. You really don’t know when to quit!” Ji Yan said coldly. He pointed at Gu Changqing, and a flame coiled out from his arm like a flaming tornado, fully a meter in diameter.

The asphalt beneath his feet instantly melted, becoming extremely viscous.

Gu Changqing halted, pulled the stopper from the Fire-Devouring Gourd, and activated it with spiritual energy. A stream of blue flame immediately burst from the gourd.

Ji Yan looked at the azure gourd in Gu Changqing’s hand with surprise, and the heat in his eyes intensified.

This man truly possessed an astonishing number of treasures. Moreover, they were completely different from the spirit equipment used by the various nations, clearly products of an entirely different technology. No wonder headquarters placed such importance on him.

A river of flame poured from the gourd and flowed through the air toward Ji Yan. Yet unlike ordinary fire, this Iceheart Flame was freezing cold. Even the surrounding air condensed, leaving a trail of white frost across the ground.

When it collided with Ji Yan’s flames, red and blue clashed without yielding an inch. The air crackled explosively, while everything nearby shattered amid the alternating extremes of heat and cold.

The Mother-and-Child Yin-Yang Swords flew from within Gu Changqing’s sleeve, wrapped in surging winds of darkness as they slashed toward Ji Yan from both sides.

At the same time, the Blood River rushed toward him.

“You do have a few tricks!” Ji Yan snorted. He snapped his fingers, and Gu Changqing immediately felt heat rising beneath his feet.

A pillar of fire then surged up from the ground beneath Gu Changqing, directly engulfing him.

The spiritual energy within the Tortoise-Snake Eight Trigrams Lamp began rapidly declining, dropping by thirty percent in only a short time.

A savage grin spread across Gu Changqing’s face. He stamped the ground and lunged at Ji Yan once more.

The pillar of fire curved around and chased after him. It was even faster than Gu Changqing, completely wrapping him within its flames.

“I’d like to see how long you can hold out!” Ji Yan sneered. When the two flying swords reached him, he immediately raised his hand. A ball of flame erupted in his palm, and the force of the explosion blasted both swords away.

With every increase in level, an Awakened’s strength grew explosively. Once one reached the sixth level, the range of available techniques became immense.

Moreover, unlike the arts practiced in Daye, every Awakened was excavating the abilities within himself. Even Awakened of the same type did not necessarily control the same powers.

But the Mother-and-Child Yin-Yang Swords circled around and slashed toward Ji Yan again. From within the Blood River, a figure emerged, gripping a long spear. Thick blood-colored energy surged from his body, as though the blood in the surrounding area were being vaporized with every passing moment.

In the blink of an eye, he transformed into a blood-red meteor, dazzlingly brilliant, and appeared before Ji Yan.

Only then did Ji Yan feel that things were becoming troublesome. Gu Changqing was clearly only a fifth-level Awakened, yet he possessed an astonishing variety of methods.

A figure made of fire stepped out from Ji Yan’s body and collided directly with the blood-red meteor. Yet the meteor’s spearpoint pierced straight through the fiery figure, coming within a hair’s breadth of stabbing into Ji Yan himself.

“Explode!”

Ji Yan’s body instantly retreated. The fiery figure then detonated with a thunderous roar, blasting Weng Ping and the Blood River apart. Even the Mother-and-Child Yin-Yang Swords, which had just slashed toward him, were sent flying.

By then, the crimson radiance outside Gu Changqing’s body had been burned away completely. He immediately struck out with an advanced Golden Light Protective Talisman. Golden light flickered around him, forcing back the flames.

His eyes remained fixed on Ji Yan as another Demon-Suppressing Thunder Talisman ignited in his hand.

A thunderclap exploded through the air. Lightning flashed overhead and struck Ji Yan directly on the crown of his head.

Ji Yan had just detonated the fiery figure and was caught almost completely off guard. The thunderbolt struck him before he had any chance to react.

The advanced Demon-Suppressing Thunder Talisman was equivalent to a single attack from a ninth-layer Qi Refinement cultivator. With one blow, it sent Ji Yan flying. His hair stood on end, while scorched burns appeared across his face and hands. His injuries were severe.

Ji Yan was completely stunned. He had never imagined that lightning would suddenly descend from the sky. For a moment, he nearly thought that someone else had intervened.

While still in midair, he swept his gaze around him.

But he saw the Mother-and-Child Yin-Yang Swords following close behind, slashing toward him. The Blood River once again surged in his direction, and from within it, the blood-colored figure carrying the long spear emerged once more.

Gu Changqing’s eyes were filled with murderous intent.

So what if Ji Yan was a sixth-level Awakened?

Gu Changqing shot toward him like an arrow. His body swelled by an entire circle. What had been as swift and sharp as an arrow instantly became a mountain crashing down from the heavens.

A nearly unstoppable punch thundered toward Ji Yan!

Ji Yan’s pupils contracted. Faced with Gu Changqing’s endless succession of techniques, even he, a sixth-level Awakened, sensed that the situation was turning dangerous.

From a distance, Zhang Fan realized that Ji Yan was in trouble and was greatly alarmed. Without time to think, his eyes instantly turned silver.

Yet Gao Wenxin vanished from where she stood.

A blade of light appeared, filling his entire field of vision, as though his world had been reduced to that single flash.

Zhang Fan’s heart pounded violently. He thrust both hands outward, and the blade of light pierced through three barriers before finally dissipating.

“Do you still have time to worry about someone else?”

Gao Wenxin’s voice reached his ears. Before he could even see her figure, a bitter chill swept up beside him.

It was not snow and ice.

It was blade light, white as snow, enveloping him completely.
