Chapter 26: You Are Not Mr. Right
Chapter 26: You Are Not Mr. Right
“Uncle Feng, there’s something I’d like to discuss with you.” After returning to the company, Xiao Xiao walked straight into Feng Lun’s office.
She had hurried in so quickly that she failed to notice someone else was there. When her gaze met the visitor’s, both she and Wu Yang were momentarily taken aback. “What are you doing here?”
Feng Lun frowned, glancing between the two, clearly surprised. “Xiao Xiao, you two know each other?”
Xiao Xiao hesitated. Wasn’t this Wu Yang the man Aunt You Ru had set her up with? Did Uncle Feng not know him? She replied awkwardly, “Well… not really.”
Wu Yang, seeing Xiao Xiao for the first time in nearly a month, couldn’t hide his eagerness. In front of Feng Lun, he asked anxiously, “Xiao Xiao, how have you been these days?”
Regretting her abrupt entrance, Xiao Xiao looked at Wu Yang apologetically. “Well, since you and Uncle Feng have business to discuss, I won’t disturb you.”
No sooner had she finished speaking than she felt as though a pair of wheels were spinning beneath her feet. In her high heels, she fled in embarrassment.
Feng You Ru, seeing Xiao Xiao pass her own office in a fluster after leaving her uncle’s, quickly stepped out to intercept her. “Why are you running so fast in those heels? Aren’t you worried about twisting your ankle?”
Realizing it was You Ru, Xiao Xiao hurriedly pulled her into her own office, closed the blinds, and asked seriously, “Tell me, where exactly did you dig up this Wu Yang as my blind date?”
You Ru swallowed nervously, seeing Xiao Xiao’s serious expression. “What do you mean? What about Wu Yang?”
Xiao Xiao tapped You Ru’s forehead. “You told me before that your uncle introduced Wu Yang to me, didn’t you?”
You Ru nodded, but seeing Xiao Xiao’s odd expression, she quickly shook her head. “Wait, Xiao Xiao, listen to me!”
But Xiao Xiao ignored her protests. “You knew all along Wu Yang worked at GLT, didn’t you? Maybe you even set us up because of it.”
Seeing that Xiao Xiao seemed to have no recollection of Wu Yang, You Ru couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
“Xiao Xiao, do you remember the time you fell into the river? It was Wu Yang and his friend who saved you that day. He’s known you for a long time—he’s always had a crush on you. You even went to the same school. And yet…”
The news left Xiao Xiao stunned. She stared at You Ru in disbelief. “What? Wu Yang and I went to the same school? Then why have I never seen him? And if he saved me, why do I have no memory of it?”
You Ru was on the verge of exasperation and at the same time deeply sympathized with poor Wu Yang.
Why is it that some people can win Xiao Xiao’s heart with just a bouquet and a text message, while others, who linger by her side day after day, quietly caring, even risking their own safety for a rare chance encounter, remain invisible to her?
You Ru sighed, her tone tinged with irony. “It’s not your eyes that can’t see; it’s your heart that’s blinded itself to him.”
After You Ru left her office, Xiao Xiao sat by the window, desperately searching her mind for any memories of Wu Yang. It seemed that everything she could recall began only after their arranged meeting.
Dejected, Xiao Xiao smacked her own head, feeling guilty for how cold she’d been to him.
Her phone rang, pulling her from her thoughts. It was Wu Yang.
“Xiao Xiao, it’s Wu Yang. If—if you’re free, could I treat you to a simple meal near your office?”
Hearing only silence on the line, Wu Yang thought she might reject him again. Just as he expected her to hang up, her voice finally came through.
“Wait for me downstairs.” Wu Yang’s heart leapt with joy at her unexpected agreement. “Okay!”
When Xiao Xiao came downstairs, Wu Yang was already waiting in the parking lot. She said, “No need to drive. I’ll take you to Aroma Rabbit Hotpot next door. You’ve treated me enough times; tonight, it’s my treat!”
Wu Yang looked at her, a little overwhelmed. “Um… I… I should be the one treating!”
Xiao Xiao glanced at his awkward, stammering demeanor and forced a light laugh. “It’s only been a few days since we last met, why so nervous?”
Wu Yang scratched his head, admitting honestly, “Well… I’m just not used to all this attention!”
She studied him closely. No wonder she’d felt a sense of déjà vu before—turns out, they’d met long ago and had history together.
“So, you also attended MBA classes at Golden University?” she began.
Wu Yang’s eyes lit up with hope. “Xiao Xiao, do you remember how we met at school?”
She pursed her lips. “As I recall, our first meeting wasn’t exactly pleasant. I was carrying a stack of workbooks when you bumped into me and scattered them everywhere. You tried to walk away without even turning around. I had to drag you back…”
Wu Yang looked regretful. “That… that was a misunderstanding. I was wearing headphones that day and didn’t hear anything…”
She shot him a look. “Don’t make excuses for yourself.”
Feeling indignant, Wu Yang began listing all the times he’d helped her from the shadows, but Xiao Xiao insisted she never knew. In his anxiety, he blurted out, “What about the time you fell into the Fu River? I saved you then too!”
By now, they’d reached their destination. Xiao Xiao gestured for him to enter, and the staff greeted them warmly. “Welcome to Aroma Rabbit Hotpot!”
As a regular, Xiao Xiao explained as they walked, “This hotpot place is unique—it only serves rabbit. From the head to the legs, it’s a full rabbit feast.”
Once seated, she fixed Wu Yang with a serious look. “Do you think that because you’ve done so much for me and I haven’t reciprocated, it makes me seem fake?”
Wu Yang nodded, his eyes fixed on her. “May I ask why?”
She knew she had to cut off his unrequited feelings. Softly, she said, “We’ve met many times, but fate has been thin between us. We met at the wrong time, so we’re destined to miss each other in the end.
It’s not that you’re not good enough, nor that I’m too picky. Ultimately, it’s just that you are not my Mr. Right.”
