Chapter Four: Pregnancy
In the hospital.
Ye Huai sat in the doctor’s office, his left arm freshly bandaged. Duan Zinan entered, holding the examination report. “Didn’t I remind you to be more careful? Why is your wound bleeding again?”
“It’s nothing,” Ye Huai replied.
“You always say that, but look at you now. Isn’t it the same as before?” Duan Zinan’s face was filled with helplessness.
Ding Lei returned with the medication and overheard this, unable to resist chiming in, “Dr. Duan, I think you should issue him a hospitalization certificate. Only then will the boss obediently stay in the hospital until he’s healed.”
Ye Huai shot him a cold glare, his tone turning icy. “How’s the matter I asked you to investigate?”
“I’ve already found out.” Understanding they had something to discuss, Duan Zinan left with his things, giving them the room.
“The woman’s name is Li Ran. She’s a sales manager at Wankang Corporation. She appeared in Jicheng yesterday because of a business trip, but unexpectedly discovered her husband, Zhang Fanfan, was having an affair with her secretary. Now, it seems they’re on the verge of divorce. When they got married, nearly all the expenses were covered by Li Ran, and the house they live in was left to her by her father. Zhang Fanfan probably doesn’t want a divorce… Wait—”
Ding Lei was reading from the file when he suddenly paused.
“What’s wrong?”
“Three months ago, she showed up in this city…”
Ye Huai’s eyes grew sharp. So he hadn’t been mistaken—the woman he’d encountered that day was indeed her! He would never forget that familiar scent.
Without another word, Ye Huai lowered his sleeve, rose, and left the office. Ding Lei hurried after him.
...
Elsewhere, in a hospital ward, Li Ran lay on the bed, her brows furrowed, showing no sign of waking.
“Chu Jing, why hasn’t Ranran woken up yet?” Zhang Fanfan asked anxiously.
Chu Jing’s expression was stern as she finished reading the report, her voice tinged with anger. “How have you been taking care of her? She’s pregnant—didn’t any of you know? And you still let her fall! If she hadn’t been brought in on time, she might have lost the baby!”
As Li Ran’s close friend, Chu Jing deliberately exaggerated the seriousness to make them pay attention.
“Pregnant? You mean Ranran is pregnant?” The most shocked was Zhang Nan, who had longed for a grandchild for three years with no result. Now, to her surprise, Ranran was finally pregnant!
“The examination results just came out. Do you doubt it?” Chu Jing tossed the report into Zhang Nan’s hands.
Zhang Nan stared at it, so overjoyed she was at a loss for words.
By contrast, Zhang Fanfan’s face remained dark as he looked at the still-unconscious Li Ran, showing no trace of happiness.
“When will she wake up?”
“She suffered a blow. It was hard enough to save the child. She’s very weak now and needs rest. She hasn’t had breakfast either. Why don’t you get her something to eat? I’ll stay here.”
“All right, I’ll go now!” Zhang Nan, delighted, picked up her bag and left without a second thought.
After some hesitation, Zhang Fanfan also followed.
Chu Jing looked back at Li Ran, who was still sleeping. The dark circles under her eyes were obvious—she clearly hadn’t been resting well. With a sigh, Chu Jing left the ward.
Once they’d all gone, Li Ran opened her eyes. She’d been awake for some time but didn’t want to see Zhang Fanfan or his mother. They didn’t care about her at all; all they cared about was money and continuing the family line.
She placed a hand on her still-flat stomach. This child had come as such a surprise…
Ye Huai happened to walk past in the corridor. Glancing inside by chance, he saw Li Ran in the hospital room and frowned. Why was she in the hospital?
