Chapter Ninety-One: A Master Who Came to My Door
“Hey, Brother Luo, why are you running so fast!”
Luo Qingshi shouted after him as she dashed in pursuit of Luo Changning.
Luo Changning’s face darkened like the bottom of a pot, and his feet seemed to have wind beneath them. Though he did not use any internal energy, he still ran at astonishing speed, quickly leaving Luo Qingshi far behind.
Seeing that she could no longer catch up, Luo Qingshi stamped her foot hard, her face full of indignation.
“Hmph. Keep running, then. Run if you dare. Let me see how long you can keep it up! One day, I’ll make you beg me in tears to marry you. By then, don’t come crying about it. It’s not as if you’re the only handsome man in this world!”
If Luo Changning had heard that from Luo the Lovestruck, he would probably have lit a string of firecrackers in celebration.
And then he would have told Luo Qingshi: I’m very pleased about this matter of you not marrying me, so please, by all means, never change your mind.
Unfortunately, Luo Changning was running far too fast and had not heard a word of it.
Before he even reached the manor gate, however, he ran into a servant boy who had come to deliver a message.
The boy had been specially chosen from the labor brokers by Aunt Qing. His background was clean, he had no bad habits, and he had only sold himself into servitude because he truly had no way left to make a living.
“Young Master, someone is looking for you at the gate!” the servant boy said.
The Su manor was vast, and it took at least half an hour to walk from the gate to the masters’ small courtyard.
By the time he got there, the boy, who knew no martial arts, was panting for breath.
Luo Changning was taken aback. “Looking for me? Do you know which collateral relative it is?”
It was no wonder he asked. He had only been in the Miaonan Circuit for a short while, and he had met very few people. Other than the collateral branches of the Su family, he could not think of anyone else in this unfamiliar place who might come looking for him.
So he asked.
“No, no, no, not the branch family masters,” the servant boy hurriedly waved his hands. After catching his breath, he went on, “They said they were from the Yun clan.”
“The Yun clan?”
Luo Changning narrowed his eyes. In the Miaonan Circuit, the only Yun clan he had heard of was the secluded Yun family he had learned about in the teahouse before, the family to which Yun Ruoyi belonged.
He could not understand why someone claiming to be from the Yun clan would have anything to do with him. Of course, he could not be certain whether it was really that secluded family.
In any case, whether mule or horse, one only had to lead it out to know.
Luo Changning used his lightness skill and in no time at all reached the front gate of the Su manor.
Those clean, clear eyes that kept appearing in his mind suddenly appeared before him once more, so abruptly that he had no chance to prepare himself.
Luo Changning felt his heart skip a beat, sour and sweet all at once.
“It really is him,” he thought.
On the surface, though, he restrained himself with all his might, so as not to show any trace of embarrassment, and asked in a calm, easy tone, “May I ask what brings the two of you here to the Su manor to see me?”
Aside from Yun Ruoyi, there was also a middle-aged man with black hair and beard, kind eyes, and a robust bearing.
He had an air of uncommon dignity about him, so his standing in the Yun clan could not be low. He was likely another important figure.
The moment Yun Ruoyi saw Luo Changning, she too was momentarily stunned. It was clear she had not expected the person she had come to find to be the very same youth she had once mistaken for a lecherous rogue at the Bai residence.
The middle-aged man sized Luo Changning up without a word. After a moment, he nodded in satisfaction.
He stroked his black beard and laughed heartily. “Indeed, a fine prospect. This trip has not been in vain!”
Luo Changning raised an eyebrow slightly, still unable to tell what the two from the secluded Yun clan wanted from him.
And the middle-aged man’s words sounded, no matter how one heard them, like something spoken to a disciple one was about to take in.
Luo Changning did not consider himself some rare genius, talented enough to draw the attention of even members of the Yun clan in seclusion.
Of course, he also did not think that these two were scheming after him. After all, he had nothing on him that would be worth scheming for.
The black-haired, black-bearded middle-aged man looked him over again with a smile before slowly saying, “Not bad. A child who can keep his composure. Little one, would you be willing to take me as your master?”
Luo Changning deliberately furrowed his brow as though offended. “Little one? Are you talking to me?”
“Yes, yes, yes, you, little one!”
Pfft.
This time even Yun Ruoyi, who had always been solemn, could not help laughing aloud, tenderness blooming at the corners of her eyes.
Looking at the young boy before her, his eyes curved in amusement, Luo Changning only felt a faint itch in his heart, as though something were about to burst forth from within him. He too laughed along with them.
At first the middle-aged man had not realized there was anything ambiguous in what he had said, and he stared blankly at the two children who had suddenly burst into laughter.
Only after he finally understood did he begin glaring and bristling in annoyance.
“Little one, I am already advanced in years. How can you toy with me like this?”
Luo Changning shook his head and looked at the clearly vigorous middle-aged man with complete exasperation. “Then why are you calling me little one when you are clearly in your prime?”
By then, the middle-aged man had obviously realized where the problem lay, and he immediately erupted into a laugh even louder than before.
“Hahahaha! What an amusing child! I am already more than three hundred years old this year. What prime? I’m half a foot in the grave already! At my age, would it not be proper to call you little one?”
At those words, Luo Changning’s heart jolted.
Seeing that black-haired, black-bearded man so full of spirit, speaking with such a strong and steady voice and showing not the slightest trace of age, he had assumed him to be a middle-aged man.
He had never imagined that the man was already over three hundred years old. Let alone calling him little one; even if he called him little baby, he would still have to answer.
At the same time, he sighed inwardly: the martial arts of the Radiant Continent were truly miraculous. Not only could they allow a person to live more than three hundred years, they could also keep one in such youthful condition. More effective than any miracle tonic.
How could one not be astonished?
This only strengthened Luo Changning’s resolve to cultivate martial arts. It seemed that beyond revenge, this world held many more things worth exploring—mysterious and wondrous beyond measure.
And yet he still could not understand why such a peerless expert would take an interest in him and even come all this way in person to accept him as a disciple.
If he remembered correctly, he had never met such a person.
So Luo Changning asked outright, “May I ask, honored elder, why do you wish to take this junior as your disciple?”
