Chapter 45: President Su Faces Rejection
That was simply out of the question. Even though President Su had told him that morning to live in the villa, there was no way he would actually do such a thing.
He was able to earn some money now and was not yet in a position where he couldn't even arrange a place for his sister to live. To put it another way, he was already extremely grateful to President Su for getting him a company car he loved and the well-paying secretary position he currently held.
If he were to accept any further kindness from her, Lin Ye truly had no idea what he could possibly offer in return.
He stopped by the roadside to casually grab a budget meal from McDonald's, then hurried over to the location of the last of the three rental apartments he had looked at the night after night.
The reason Lin Ye had settled on this particular apartment after much deliberation was quite simple: it was close to the company, making the daily commute convenient; it was close to the school, making it easy for his sister to get there; and finally, it was very close to this coffee shop.
He was just about to call the real estate agent to negotiate the price again. The agent had quoted three thousand yuan a month the previous night, but based on Lin Ye's experience, he could talk the price down by at least five hundred yuan. Wouldn't that saved money be better spent buying pork ribs to eat?
Just as he pulled out his phone to find the agent's number, to his surprise, President Su's call came through.
Though he found it a bit strange that President Su was calling him so close to the end of the workday, Lin Ye decisively answered the call.
"Hello? Lin Ye, thank you for your hard work today. I originally planned to tell you that you had a week to finish cleaning the house, but I didn't expect you to get it all done in major part of a day. You must be exhausted, right?"
President Su's tone always seemed to carry a gentle, smiling warmth that felt very comfortable to listen to.
"You usually take good care of me, President Su. It's only right that I help you with these little tasks, and I naturally wanted to complete your assignment as quickly as possible."
Lin Ye's reply was quite official, but for some reason, upon hearing his words, President Su on the other end of the line seemed even more pleased with him.
"By the way, Lin Ye, the reason I'm calling is to discuss something with you..."
A question mark appeared over Lin Ye's head. What on earth was going on? The general manager wanted to discuss something with him? Had he really gotten that important now?
Not daring to presume too much, Lin Ye hurriedly said, "President Su, just tell me whatever task you have for me. I'll say it again—whatever task you assign, I will do my absolute best to finish it in the shortest time possible!"
***
"Hahaha, it's not really a task. It's just that my father went to look at the villa this afternoon and said that while it was cleaned very cleanly, the house lacked a human touch, which won't do."
"Sigh, he ended up lecturing me about it for a good half hour."
"I remember you rent a place outside, right, Lin Ye? How about you simply move directly into my villa? It will save you the rent money, and I won't have to worry about the house deteriorating from being uninhabited for too long. It's a win-win."
As soon as she finished speaking, President Su on the other end of the phone raised an eyebrow at the girl sitting on the sofa beside her, with the unspoken air of someone who had the matter completely under control.
The girl pressed her lips together and said nothing, only shaking her head with a helpless smile.
"There's no need, President Su. Thank you very much for your kind offer, but I've decided to continue renting a place outside. You already take such good care of me normally, and I keep all your kindness in mind, but I shouldn't trouble you this time."
It was as if Lin Ye had prepared this speech beforehand; he rattled off the words in one breath. He had already accepted the consequences: if this refusal angered President Su and she fired him, then so be it.
President Su widened her already large eyes on the other end of the line. Although she had anticipated that Lin Ye might refuse, she never expected him to refuse so firmly and so completely.
From the very beginning, she had never considered that Lin Ye would turn down an offer that was entirely beneficial to him with no drawbacks. Consequently, after Lin Ye's polite refusal, a brief silence fell over the phone.
Fortunately, it didn't last long. Just as a light sweat began to bead on Lin Ye's forehead, President Su's voice came through the phone once more, though her tone lacked its previous amusement and carried a slightly peculiar flavor.
"Alright, I understand. It was my lack of consideration. You're a good young man; keep up the hard work, I have high hopes for you."
After hanging up, Lin Ye's face scrunched up into a knot. Wasn't this President Su a bit too strange? It was somewhat... impossible to figure out what she was really thinking.
Lin Ye even began to wonder if President Su would hold a grudge and make things difficult for him because of this rejection.
Seeing that it was getting late, Lin Ye dialed the real estate agent's number to renegotiate the price...
President Su stared blankly at her phone, still immersed in the feeling of being rejected by Lin Ye. To be honest, it had been a very long time since she last experienced what it felt like to be turned down by someone.

"Oh, wonderful! I went out of my way with all sorts of good intentions to help you secure your little man, and now that I've been bullied by him, you have the nerve to sit there and laugh at me!"
President Su picked up a goose-feather pillow from the sofa and hurled it at the girl on the other side who was covering her mouth in muffled laughter. Naturally, the targeted girl did not take it lying down, and a unique pillow fight instantly erupted in the living room.
Five minutes later, the two of them leaned against opposite ends of the sofa, their breathing slightly hurried as two distinctly sized chests rose and fell.
"So what are you going to do now? Are you just going to keep playing this waiting game with him? I just don't understand. Aren't you simply worried that his pride would be wounded if he found out you arranged his job? What does that have to do with how you usually interact with him?"
Disregarding all elegance, President Su kicked off her shoes and propped her nude-stockinged legs up on the coffee table in front of her. Her calves and thighs were completely free of excess fat, and their straight line was nothing short of perfection.
Seeing the girl beside her lower her head slightly and remain silent, President Su let out a soft sigh and continued, "Anyway, if I were you, I'd stick by his side every single day."
"After all, whether you're next to him or not, he has no idea that everything he currently possesses was arranged by you."
The girl suddenly raised her head. Exactly—there was nothing wrong with that logic. She had trapped herself in a dead end and completely failed to realize that this was the simplest solution of all.
Noticing that her words seemed to have taken effect, a smile curved the corner of President Su's mouth, and she decided to administer one final, potent dose of persuasion.
"Well, I won't interfere with whatever you choose to do; you surely have your own reasons. It's just that there are plenty of little vixens in our company, you know, and each one of them is dying to swallow your little man whole. For instance..."
Her voice stopped abruptly right there. President Su picked up the teacup from the coffee table and actually began to sip her tea in leisurely silence.
