Volume One, Chapter 16: You Don’t Understand

Mo Lingcheng looked at her without moving.
Shen Qingqing didn’t mind at all. She rested her chin on his shoulder, slightly turning her face to lean close to his ear.
“He… caused my death before. So, even if I die, I won’t marry him.”
Mo Lingcheng frowned slightly but said nothing.
He was weighing how much trust to place in this drunken woman.
Shen Qingqing sighed softly and continued whispering in his ear: “I need to find a strong backer quickly and cancel this marriage…”
Hearing her unskillful plan, Mo Lingcheng’s frown deepened.
Shen Qingqing lifted her face and smiled at him, “Do you know who the backer I want to find is?”
“Who?” Mo Lingcheng pinched her waist, his expression serious.
“It’s…” Shen Qingqing hesitated, words caught in her throat.
She stared at his face for a long moment, then suddenly changed the subject:
“Are you Assistant Zhou, or the one in camouflage?”
“Does it matter?” Mo Lingcheng stared straight at her, unwilling to miss a single micro-expression.
Shen Qingqing shook her head vigorously, then buried her head into his embrace, reminding herself, “Don’t tell him…”
What if this isn’t a dream? What if he really is Assistant Zhou?
Assistant Zhou and Mo Lingcheng were on the same side.
“Shen Qingqing!” Mo Lingcheng was inexplicably annoyed; his rare patience was wearing thin.
He gripped her waist firmly, forcing her to sit up straight. “Not going to say, huh? Believe it or not, I’ll throw you out of the car.”
Upon hearing this, Shen Qingqing buried her head even deeper.
Like an ostrich, she curled her body and desperately hid her head against Mo Lingcheng’s chest.
Mo Lingcheng was so annoyed he was speechless. One hand tightened on her waist, the other on the door handle, as if about to open it and throw her out.
A sudden blast of cold wind swept in from the door, making Shen Qingqing break out in a cold sweat and sober up significantly.
This wasn’t a dream!
This man really was opening the car door to throw her out!
She would die.
He wasn’t Assistant Zhou; he was the one in camouflage.
How could Assistant Zhou be this reckless?
She didn’t think anymore; survival was paramount.
She tightened her arms around Mo Lingcheng’s waist, suddenly lifting her head and kissing his lips.
This unexpected move made Mo Lingcheng tremble slightly.
In fact, Shen Qingqing later carefully reviewed the memory: the man in camouflage in the valley didn’t want her kidney; instead, he helped treat her leg and neutralized the snake venom…
She thought he probably didn’t really want to kill her.
He was just irritable, sharp-tongued, and impatient.
Moreover, the man in her dream that night was very likely the one in camouflage.
Only, she still couldn’t tell if it was a dream or reality.

She vaguely remembered that the man in her dream especially liked biting her lips.
Now that she offered her lips to him willingly, perhaps he would calm down and spare her.
Shen Qingqing was muddled in her thoughts, but her lips never left Mo Lingcheng’s slightly cool, thin ones.
The softness of the lips made Mo Lingcheng forget to think.
However, the hand gripping Shen Qingqing’s waist only tightened.
With eyes closed, Shen Qingqing anxiously waited a long time, but Mo Lingcheng made no move.
Determined, she tentatively parted her lips and bit back on Mo Lingcheng’s lower lip.
Finally, Mo Lingcheng reacted. He stiffened at first, then resolutely pulled away after a few seconds.
He pinched her jaw, his face dark with displeasure, his low voice tinged with restraint: “Shen Qingqing, you really are something!”
Her heart pounded wildly under the pressure of his low aura.
Her heavy head felt like she had just caused a huge disaster.
How did the man in camouflage know her name?
Why was he here?
Why was the man in camouflage riding in the big G?
She was Assistant Zhou!
Shen Qingqing closed her eyes and collapsed into his arms, pretending to be unconscious.
“Pretend all you want! You better never wake up!” Mo Lingcheng said coldly, threatening.
Shen Qingqing pursed her lips and stayed perfectly still, determined to keep up the act.
Minutes ticked by, and Shen Qingqing nervously waited.
Mo Lingcheng not only didn’t throw her out of the car but even tossed a suit jacket over her.
Then, she heard the sound of the window closing.
So he had only opened the window earlier, not the door.
He was just trying to scare her, and indeed he had succeeded.
Shen Qingqing wished she could dig a hole and hide in it. Tonight she had made a fool of herself and dared not imagine how she would face him at dawn.
No matter — tomorrow she would pretend to have amnesia.
Having made up her mind and no longer feeling in danger, Shen Qingqing’s tense nerves gradually relaxed.
She shifted her body, found a comfortable position, and continued pretending to sleep.
Pretending so much that eventually, Shen Qingqing actually fell asleep.
“Boss, we’ve arrived.” The driver stopped the car at the hotel entrance and spoke softly.
Mo Lingcheng glanced at the Mo family employees at the hotel entrance, then looked at the person in his arms and said calmly, “Change hotels.”
He convinced himself it wasn’t out of pity for her but to avoid messy rumors.
That night, Shen Qingqing slept soundly without dreams.
The next morning, she was awakened by the ringing phone.
With eyes closed, she habitually reached for the nightstand on the left.
But her hand didn’t find the cold phone—it touched warm, smooth skin.
Shen Qingqing snapped open her eyes and saw Mo Lingcheng sitting against the headboard, looking down at her.

At that moment, her right hand was resting on the waist exposed beneath his shirt.
“Assistant Zhou?!” Shen Qingqing immediately pulled her hand back and sprang out of bed.
Her mind raced as her eyes quickly scanned the room…
Unwanted memories surged into her mind.
She had gotten drunk yesterday. She had forcibly kissed Assistant Zhou…
She scrutinized Mo Lingcheng’s clothes and then glanced at her own.
Damn it! Both their clothes had been changed.
Could it be that last night she had forcibly slept with Assistant Zhou?
Had she mistaken him for the man in her dream?
Shen Qingqing slapped her head in frustration.
She had never hated her mental state this much before.
“Don’t you think you’re stupid enough?” Mo Lingcheng stretched out his long legs, stood up, and elegantly buttoned his shirt.
Shen Qingqing stared blankly at his stunning face, biting her lips almost to the point of bleeding before timidly stammering:
“Did we… sleep together last night?”
Mo Lingcheng paused his hand movements and lowered his gaze to look at her as if she were a fool.
“Don’t you know if you did or not?”
Shen Qingqing looked utterly confused.
Should she know?
She was drunk—how could she be certain?
Mo Lingcheng thought Shen Qingqing’s stupidity was beyond the limits of normal people.
He snorted coldly and went into the bathroom.
Shen Qingqing sat on the bed, pondering carefully.
In dramas and novels, women who had been with men all night usually felt as if their bones were about to fall apart.
At the moment, she didn’t feel anything like that.
Suddenly, she recalled how she felt waking up in the Bancheng hospital.
Then, she really did feel like she was falling apart.
Could it be that night wasn’t just a dream?
Shen Qingqing felt a pang of fear. She always thought her whole body hurt because of all her injuries.
She suddenly lifted the big T-shirt covering her and carefully examined herself.
There were no red spots on her chest or waist.
But they had been there that night.
“Ahem!” Mo Lingcheng came out of the bathroom and saw Shen Qingqing lifting her shirt like that.
