Chapter 2: Was Her Vow Not Bitter Enough?

Lou Xizhou glanced at Tang Yu, who was looking down at her phone, his eyes shimmering with fragmented light.
“Let’s put this aside for now,” he said, then hung up.
After all, the engagement was off.
Tang Yu hurriedly said, “I have something at work; I’ll contact Mr. Lou later.”
She had taken the day off for the engagement, but plans had changed. The agency likely already knew, which was why they reached out to her.
Lou Xizhou nodded slightly and accompanied her to sign the documents.
“Shall I give Miss Tang a ride?” Lou Xizhou asked after signing.
Thinking the car was already sent for emergency repair and it was just a short distance, Tang Yu didn’t refuse.
When they left the police station, Lou Huainan had already left.
Lou Xizhou’s car was a Rolls-Royce, an older model but very comfortable.
On the way to the newspaper office, they chatted quite a bit.
Tang Yu felt that being with him wasn’t as distant as before.
She also learned from him that Lou Huainan’s mother had passed away from illness, and that Lou Xizhou was merely Lou Huainan’s uncle.
“Sorry, Mr. Lou, I thought you were his father,” she said, folding her hands in apology but averting her eyes slightly.
Lou Xizhou tilted his body slightly, looking at her with a smile that was both amused and deeply moved.
Seeing him merely smile, Tang Yu inexplicably felt he was more approachable.
From her experience interviewing many social elites, very few were willing to humble themselves to talk to ordinary people.
Most were insincere and built façades.
Approaching the newspaper office, Tang Yu asked him to stop about a hundred meters away.
“Thank you for the ride, Mr. Lou. Goodbye,” she said softly, lowering her gaze, avoiding his eyes.
Lou Xizhou smiled at her standing straight outside the car. “Goodbye.”
Once the car drove away, Tang Yu walked toward the building.
Just as she swiped her card to enter, Zhou Ruancheng called from an unfamiliar number.
“Tang Yu, it’s not the first time you’ve canceled the engagement. Do you really have to block me? I’ll make it up with a grand one next month. Hurry and unblock me!”
Tang Yu stopped in her tracks, her voice cold and emotionless.
“Zhou Ruancheng, I’ve said there won’t be another engagement. We’re over.”
Another breakup?
She remembered the last time he acted like this.
But in the end, they reconciled.

Zhou Ruancheng found it ridiculous and scolded her.
“Where’s your generosity? Yu Shuang is all alone in Beicheng. We grew up together, neighbors. If I can help her, I won’t just stand by!”
“She finally got into Beicheng TV Station after struggling back home. She’s not like you, a reporter at the headquarters who’s so comfortable. You give her the cold shoulder, haven’t helped even once for my sake. I didn’t say anything about that, right? She’s the one I want to help, so I didn’t ask you to do the same, but you can’t stop me from helping her!”
After saying this, Zhou Ruancheng felt powerless and angry, thinking Tang Yu had become unreasonable and didn’t understand him.
He really was just helping Yu Shuang, nothing more.
Yes, canceling the engagement was his mistake; he didn’t consider her feelings, but he also didn’t want her to be embarrassed at the engagement alone.
And how could he possibly marry Yu Shuang?
Tang Yu didn’t want to argue endlessly. She just wanted a clean break.
“I never stopped you from helping her! I won’t in the future either! Don’t call me again! I’m serious about breaking up; if I’m lying, may you get hit by a car when you leave the house!”
His childhood friend being alone in Beicheng was none of her concern.
But she, as a Beicheng native, was alone because of him.
The last time she canceled the engagement, her family wanted her to break up, but she didn’t. Relatives and friends called her foolish and stopped talking to her.
This time, he canceled again. She only felt lucky no one in her family was here.
Her vow was harsh, and Zhou Ruancheng felt a moment’s panic.
But then he thought canceling twice was indeed hurtful. Her anger was justified.
“I know you’re angry and talking nonsense. Calm down, I’ll contact you tomorrow. Remember—”
Tang Yu sneered coldly and hung up.
Where did he get the confidence that she was just angry? Was her curse not strong enough?
Or should she have said, “If breaking up is a lie, may Yu Shuang get hit by a car when she leaves the house!”
Upon entering the editor-in-chief’s office, Yu Shuang was unexpectedly there.
Tang Yu knocked on the open door.
Editor-in-Chief Li turned and immediately smiled when she saw her.
“Tang Yu, you’re here.”
Tang Yu was Editor Li’s personally recruited reporter with a permanent position, strong professional skills, and a mentor-mentee relationship with him.
“The editor asked for me,” Tang Yu said, sitting at the desk without glancing at Yu Shuang beside her.
Editor Li looked at her kindly and said, “I told you last month there’s an important interview assignment this month. Yu Shuang came to me wanting to try, so I wanted to ask your thoughts first.”
Previously, Editor Li wouldn’t have considered Yu Shuang; most good opportunities would go to Tang Yu.
Yu Shuang was a contract worker transferred from another province two years ago, less capable than Tang Yu.
But since receiving various support from Zhou Ruancheng behind the scenes, her skills had nearly matched Tang Yu’s, lacking only a permanent position.
Yu Shuang strongly desired to become a permanent staff member, which required outstanding achievements recognized by the agency.

Clearly, this important interview was a great opportunity.
Tang Yu understood Editor Li’s meaning.
She was unwilling to give Yu Shuang the assignment; it was hers.
But Yu Shuang’s abilities over the past year were obvious. Constantly favoring Tang Yu would cause dissatisfaction.
Still, this time, she wouldn’t concede!
Because of Zhou Ruancheng, she had already surrendered many resources. Behind every concession was Zhou Ruancheng helping Yu Shuang.
Yu Shuang took advantage of the resources Tang Yu gave up and relied on Zhou Ruancheng’s support, enjoying the fruits too long.
“Editor, I won’t give it up,” Tang Yu said. “But we can compete fairly: whoever secures the interview first gets it.”
Yu Shuang was stunned, turning to look at her with resentment in her eyes.
Tang Yu wanted to embarrass her in the agency!
Editor Li nodded slightly, his gaze toward Yu Shuang full of confidence in Tang Yu.
“Yu Shuang, what do you say?”
With nowhere to retreat, Yu Shuang had no choice but to accept.
“I have no problem.”
In truth, Yu Shuang envied Tang Yu’s luck.
Tang Yu was born in a first-tier city with many advantages, met a benefactor like Editor Li right after graduation, and her career skyrocketed, with several lucrative side jobs.
Yu Shuang came from a small, insignificant city, struggling in love and career until Zhou Ruancheng’s help brought her some progress.
“Since there’s no problem, get ready. I’ll send you the interviewee’s details on your phones,” Editor Li said.
Tang Yu stood to leave the office, only to be caught up by Yu Shuang outside.
“Tang Yu, could you… give me this interview?” Yu Shuang asked softly.
Tang Yu hated Yu Shuang’s sanctimonious act, yet Zhou Ruancheng adored it.
“Should I give you my family too?”
“That’s not what I meant…”
“Then shut up!”
Tang Yu turned away coldly. Her phone buzzed with a message from Editor Li—
President and Acting Chairman of Shengsheng Group, Lou Xizhou.
